Make it simple when you pull the engine by using a leveler between the hoist and the engine. Get the weight on the hoist them crank the leveler so the engin comes out "nose up." lots of clearance problems can be avoided. You'll need room beneath and above to do it this way. There are also four attachment points for the lift so there's less strain per bolt as compared to two. I'm not trying to sell this particular leveler, it was just easier to get a picture off ebay, than other places.

No need for a leveler if your only pulling the motor, or if pulling the motor/trans seperately. I was going to go that route, turned out to be more of a PITA than just using chain.

Gonna pull the radiator today. Spraying pb blaster on exhaust connections too. Plan on having it out by the end of the week. Will it be a good idea to take off the water pump etc. Just to clean, or should it be fine cleaning everything from the outside and repainting?

I'd leave it alone unless it's leaking and your going to replace it.

I like to use the leveler also. Makes things simple.

As for pulling the water pump. The engine and all it's parts are old. Start with all new hoses and filters, then price out things like fuel pump, thermostat and water pump. If you can afford to change these, it may save you another project later.
Just do the best that you can on your budget. No matter what you end up doing, you will be better off in the end.

I will be pulling the engine without the trans. I emptied and removed the radiator today. Tomorrow I will be removing all lines and labeling them.
Is there anything I need to do before disconnecting the trans from the engine? Will any surprise fluids be coming out of anything etc?
I plan on having it out by sunday because of work etc.

Just make sure everything is disconnected, unbolt the trans from the motor, and you should be set.

Also, once you get the motor hanging, you might get some coolant spillage out of the water pump.

The exhaust manifolds have 1/2"x20 studs/nuts. They are generally frozen and require the acetylene torch. I replace the nuts with brass-not so easy to find. Also you will need a fairly thin wall 6 point 3/4" deep well socket to turn those nuts off-good luck

clean and paint the tranny too . will show up in that big engine bay , lots of look-see room there . look nicer underneath too . only cost ya a little cleaner and paint and time . hood and radiator out and that should slide out pretty easy - don't forget to plug the end of the trans ! del

Radiator is out. Heater hoses, fan ground straps, fuel line and a couple other misc.
The intake manifold is left, im gonna take it off carb and all. Then the mounts and tranny bolts
This may sound like a stupid question, but do I have to drain the oil before pulling the engine?

Nope, I pulled mine with the oil.

Drain the oil and pull the pan off-check general condition of 'things' and clean out the sump and pick up screen and then pull a rod cap and check bearing condition-can't pull an engine to only paint-there has to be a law!

Yep. You can drain the oil while it's hanging but you want to pull the pan and valve covers and clean and inspect.
You will want to make sure and stuff a clean shop rag where the carb was also. Don't want to get any crud inside the engine!
Pulling the rod cap isn't a bad idea but make sure you have a torque wrench to put it back.

Make sure you support the tranny or you could have a mess if it drops down and the converter slides out. Besides it is a good idea to try and keep the converter seated in the pump if possible. Good luck with your project.:TU:

Oh yea, I forgot to mention this. Definitely put a jack under the front on the trans.

ALLOW ME TO SUGGEST... BEFORE YOU REMOVE ANYTHING FROM THAT ENGINE..PLUG HOLES like water jacket, valve cover grommets etc... and give that ole gal a thorough washing in PURPLE STUFF or mineral spirits works too......rinse. let dry then wash again..do this a few times and remove all the grime and gunky road grease buildup over the years..some scrapping may be necessary...REMEMBER ...the better you get it clean NOW..the easier to wipe down with a good NAME BRAND PREPSOL, and than apply color!!! i was curious about this method and was thinking of doing it, thanks. Is pressure washing ok?

EXTREME pressure washing is NOT ADVISED..however, a home type water supply line attachment without the 5 hp pressure pump, is what I use...high pressure washing can force water and junk into the motor thru leaky valve cover, vallye pan and timing chain gasket areas....

Pulling the block drains is a good thing before the engine comes out, cuts down on the coolant mess on the garage floor. When you pull the fuel pump, check the timing chain for slack. Dynaflow converter won't fall out, their bolted it.
