is 3.42 enough/ too much with 200-4r behind 430 in g-body?

i finally picked up an 8.5" 10 bolt! the reason i'm asking, is my brother is stripping a '69 riv (superb runner), and is letting me have the 430 that's in it... he was going to install a 6.0L in its place but decided against the huge expense of body repairs. in the meantime, my 83 t-type is at his place, and he will help install the big block for me while i am away working.

i will install a 3" inlet, dual 3" outlet exhaust system( for another thread). i also scooped a 85 camaro 1 3/8" sway bar for it, and will return for the GN steering box and fuel pump sender. at any rate, as this will be a handling/road rocket/ fun car, am looking for feedback on others' similarly equipped cars.

EFI will be installed at a later date, but i wish to tighten things up drive-line wise, like install a powertrax into the recently acquired 10 bolt, and freshen up the 200, but more curious about drive-ability with a STOCK 430, 3" exhaust, and o/d. any and all thoughts greatly appreciated.

    thanks.

As long as the converter is tight and we're talking about a stock or near stock, low end camshaft, I think you'll like it. In overdrive with a 27" tall tire you'll only be seeing 2000 rpm at 70 mph. If you're running a taller tire, you might even want to consider a numerically higher gear like 3.73:1 so as not to be lugging the engine below 2000 rpm at highway speeds when in overdrive.

If you decide to sacrifice some low rpm torque and cam for higher rpm power, you will probably be better off with numerically higher gears for that reason right off the bat. Here's an easy way to experiemnt: http://www.wallaceracing.com/gear-speed.php . This calculator assumes zero converter slippage, which is what you'd see when in lockup.

On another note, 3" duals on a stock 430 engine sounds like overkill to me, 2.5" will do nicely and be easier to route.

It should work just fine. Make sure that the trans is built by someone that know how and run a 2400 stall D5 converter.

Considerring ALL of the GN's and T-types from 84 through 87 came with the 3.42 gear, yeah, I'd say it is a pretty good choice for use in a Regal. Just get an aftermarket cross member to mount the 200-4R trans to clear the exhaust. You'll need to modify the carb linkage to get the correct arrangement for the TV cable.

I vote for a 3.73 with the overdrive and make sure you use the lockup converter. Wire the converter up so that it always has power and the ground has a switch for you to control. be suer to add a brake switch as well so that the converter unlocks when you hit the brakes. Otherwise you could have the engine stall when you hit the brakes.

    hi there devon!

i was hoping not to mislead anyone with the three inch exhaust, but i am assembling the t-type on the cheap... i yanked a (crap! i can't see it from here...) 3" single inlet, dual 3" outlet exhaust system from someone's discarded '85 z28 race car. the shiny exhaust tips are still shiny, and the clamp set-up came apart without wd-40 or gig-a-loo (it took but a bit of wrestling to free the pieces apart). the exhaust system is only dirty and has very little to no miles whatsoever. as i have heard often that these cars share an extreme amount of architecture to the g-bodies, i thought it would be a natural to use the rearward portion of it under my t-type. the shipping/stocking stickers are still legilble on those pieces i might add. also, on that rip to the heap, i yanked a complete 8000k headlight kit, complete B&M shifter kit(brackets and all, with an o/d indicator plate), a set of finned M/T valve covers(+ said shifter...for my 18 yr old's '71 SS454 clone), a 1 3/8" sway bar(same race car) for 315$ tax in. out of the GN parked right beside it in the heap, i yanked the 8.5" rear diff w/3.42's... and going back monday for the steering box and another huge sway bar for my 041 headed 327 powered '81 monte carlo.

since i did a disc brake spindle swap/spring upgrade/front-end rebuild on junior's chevelle this spring( which required using my huge sway bar from my 455 buick powered 55 chev truck project, i will be returning to the heap for another sway bar(2nd gen f-body), and perhaps the rear diff out of a 63 olds i've been eying there for some time(but only if he lets me of course.......)

i'll post this on another thread though, so as not to hija ck my own thread...

    thanks again 'all, and reagrds,

    rob.

    I'm running a 3.42 rear/700r4 tranny combo and IMO it works very well..the 700 is a .70 final drive and the 200 is a .67..about 2 MPH difference.

hello, and thanks Gary, Devon, Gord and Sean,

thanks again... very good confirmations from you. yeah... as far as the linkages go for that 200-4r, i remembered a bit of something regarding the lack of provision for a kickdown/ TV cable. it seems there isn;t any on those years' carbs... as the kicksown was electric as far as memory serves, and it was operated via brake pedal/linkage (at least that;s how i remember the old man's 70 biscayne, i was eight when he quit driving it). and looking over my boat anchor parts, (SF block with stuck piston, flattened lobe, with a pair of freeze cracked 768's...), i do not recall seeing a provision for operating a TV cable, and it is like that also on the blue 455 sitting in my 55 project ( i yanked that one from an 86 regal) and it is currently mounted on a th350 without TV cabling attached and could shred tires with ease... at any rate, i may need to whittle some form of attachment to the current carb linkages.

    again regards,
    rob.
