When I bought my 68 GS last fall, the interior lights didn't work. I found the fuse had one side pulled out. Pushed it back in place, lights worked normally....with the dash switch, and with opening/closing the doors. But NOW, the lights have been staying on after I close the door(s), and with the ignition off and doors closed, so I pulled the fuse half out again. Sometimes they go off, sometimes they stay on. No specific pattern going on here. I suspect the switches on one of the doors. Does someone like a NAPA or Autozone carry replacements for these? Is there something else I should be looking for that might cause this?
David, Two culprits come to mind immediately: Headlight switch and door switches. Door switches are more likely the problem, so I'd start there. Check for adjustment and if that looks right, check for a malfunction. I don't know for sure, but I suspect if you show up at the NAPA store with the switch, they'd be able to find a replacement. If your headlight switch rheostat is working smoothly and the lights are steady, showing no flickker when you turn them on and move the knob a bit, I'd say that switch is OK. Also, check the wiring to the door switches, as it is vulnerable to damage while removing interior parts and body work. A short in the line could cause the lamps to stay on. JMC
