Intake leak

I purchased a rebuilt 800 cfm Quadrajet for the 70 455 in our '64 skylark Convertible. Performance went down hill. The engine won't idle very well and there sometimes is vacuum to the distributor at idle. It has a major hesitation when you step on it and the plugs are white. I sprayed starting fluid around the carb to find no apparent difference. Then I sprayed along th intake gasket and the idle seems to pick up. I pulled the intake manifold and sprayed the tin gasket with permatex copper gasketmaker and put it bakc on. The leak on one side seems to be gone but it still seems to leak a little on the left side and no difference at all with performance and idle adjustment.

I have a set of TA soft gaskets for an aluminum intake. Can I use these gaskets on the stock intake? (There doesn't appear to be room enough under the hood for the TA intake the the Quadrejet or The 850 holley). What do I do about the valley pan.

Is the vacuum to the distributor related to this or is there another problem to deal with.

Thanks in advance for any input
