nope. You need coverage from your own policy to be sure. The hauling company should have Motor Truck Cargo coverage too to cover their exposure but if you have coverage then if something happens it’s then becomes an issue between the insurance companies and you are not caught in the middle.
What about us folks who own thier own trailers and tow thier own vehicles? I trailer my car to the track, 8 miles to and fro. Another question, what would I need for coverage to haul cars commercially? Jim
Odd,...fixed one a few weeks ago where he just bought a car,..rear ended another truck and the engine on the back of the trailer hit the back of the vehicle on the trailer,..they paid to fix everything as it was "attached" to the tow vehicle Insurance on our rollback covered the vehicle 1million worth actually,..all the major carriers are liscenced and bonded with even more coverage Hell if the tow vehicle does provide any kind of coverage I can't see a situation where the towed vehicles insurance would step in unless the tow vehicles insurance refused to cover or didn't provide enough,..insurance isn't gonna wanna pay if someone else's is supposed too. Same way when a dude was driving my Trans AM and destroyed it, he carried Collision insurance and I didn't so his payed for my car even though they put up a hell of a fight about it.
Generally 1 million is the minimum commercial coverage. My 500,000 coverage covers only what is physically connected to my truck not what is connected to the trailer. My trailer insurance covers what is connected to the trailer, and yes I have a separate policy on my trailer. I previously ran hot shot expedited transport up to 18 motorcycles at a time. My insurance costs were around 375.00 a month for 1.5 million of insurance including contents. Hope that helps Jim.
Let us clarify what is going on. Is this a commercial enterprise or the average Joe towing their car to a track/show? Private use or commercial use (commercial use use is anytime one could reasonably expect to make a profit or gain)? What is happening that the OP posted?
Can we separate those two , Average Joe , towing to an from track... And Average Joe decides to offer his services for pay to the public.... Jim
I was all but certain anything in tow behind an insured truck was covered by the trucks insurance for basic liability anyway. Noncommercial use.
For personal use, yes but for just liability in case the trailer does damage. Even personal cargo is not covered by the towing vehicle policy, you must have Other Than Collision and Collision on whatever cargo you have. If for profit or gain, zero coverage even if you don’t make anything. Must have Motor Ttuck Cargo coverage.
you need to have insurance on your car and your friend needs to carry enough limits to satisfy the repairs of your car if he would be negligent and damage your car. All this goes out the window the moment he takes one red cent in pay.
I have comp & collision on my vehicle. Not sure about his vehicle / trailer, but I certainly suspect not.
my friend is hauling it from middle va to south fl. I was just wondering if there is something else I need to do to protect it financially.
Put insurance on everything and anything that your vehicle is on or attached to weather you own it or not. Once the vehicle arrives safely cancel the extra polices.
You cannot insure something you have no financial interest in. You cannot I sure his trailer under a policy you take out.
