"insurance bumpers"?

    Back in the day, 1966 or there abouts, we used to call chrome bumpers that came in three pieces insurance bumpers. The idea was that insurance companies liked them because if they were damaged they might only have to buy 1/3 of a bumper. I am seeing cars for sales on ebay that claim to be all original and never repaired, with both bumpers being made of three bolt together pieces. This type of bumper has a joint about a 1/3 of the way across the bumper where it bolts together. Am I correct in my assumption that three part bumpers are replacements? Just want to know.....
