should the new lifters be soaked in oil before installing? if so how long should they soaked for? do they need to be pumped up or just soak them and install ? thanks dave

Do a search on lifters. There have been many opinions on this subject. I will not repeat, because my memory may not serve me correct. I pump them up in oil. But, others are more experienced.

Pumping them up submerged in oil is the worst thing you can do.....easy way to wipe a cam or have the valves stay open.

A dab of molylube on the base and some heavy oil on the sides will be fine.

Each lifter should be completely disassembled and cleaned, then lightly lubed with engine oil.
These things are typically full of crud from the factory.

I have heard of metal shavings inside the lifters this year at the Nats. It was suggested to me to take apart and clean them out.

Or you can buy the better quality chevy lifters and run approx. .100" longer push rods.

if there were metal shavings in a ta lifter the metal came from somewhere else in the engine. the chevy lifters are no better they are most likley made by the same people who make the ta lifters. you guys think way to much, put moly lube on the bottom of the lifter and put them in.

Rod, these were new lifters not used ones that I was told about.

There is supposedly only one mfg. that makes buick lifters now? They were reported to have shavings from the machining process. This was told to me by two reputable buick engine builders that were vendors at the Nats. They both said to use chevy lifters from Crane or Comp, etc. and use longer puch rods.
They were both having lifters that were wiping out cams and when they took the lifters apart there was metal shaving still attached to the oil hole in the side of the lifter body from drilling that hole. And it was told to me that they checked new lifters as well.

Rod, I am not trying to spread rumors here. I was looking a new cam and lifters for my next engine whille at the Nats and I talked to a lot of engine builders while I was there. I did buy a cam but not lifters. Also there were some other conversations that I listened in on and they had lifter problems as well. I don't beleive that TA makes there own lifters and in no way am I talking about there parts being made this way. I like TA and I have a set of heads ordered from him now.

I am just bringing out what I heard so that someone else will not run into this problem. I know that I can not afford to make a costly mistake in my next engine as my money will not allow this.

7 skylark 1, Please call Jim Weise, Jim Buriek, Phil Dehabey, TA, Brian Earick or whoever to check with them. They are very good with the BBB and can lead you in the right direction. If you need some phone numbers just PM me. I just talked with Phil the other day on the phone and he is super nice. He told me that his brother and him took there car to a quick 8 race and won agaiinst a faster dragster. They had the white regal that won Q16 BB and king of the hill at the Nats.

I am just trying to use caution rather than throw money at a potential problem. I don't mind taking the time to do a little research, as I have a little more time to think about my next engine rather than throw money at it!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took me three full sets of lifters to get one set that wouldn't bleed down, of the three sets there might have been 6ea. lifters that didn't need a complete disassembly and cleaning.
Additionally, stay away from the lifters that use a flat disc as a check valve, I only found 3 of 32 that would stay pumped up over night, the style with the ball check valve (same style as original buick) are much, much better.
Disassemble just one of your lifters and use a clean white rag to clean the inside bore, you won't need any other convincing.
