Installing a Turbo on a 3.8

If you guys think this is a bad idea let me know, has anyone installed a turbo on a FWD V6 Century. I have a 3.8 carburated 84 Century with many little performance changes and looking for a little more power or would a factory superchager be the ticket, AL.

I'm pretty sure there were some FWD cars that came from the factory turbocharged in the early 80's. The Riviera comes to mind, but that's about all i can remember. I dont' really know much about those FWD cars, but I would imagine most things should interchange on cars from similar years.

The FWD Riviera still used a full frame and a conventionally mounted V6 or V8 while the Century would use a transverse engine I believe. Putting a turbo on it would more a matter of proper fabrication of the various plumbing systems needed to supply the turbo with air, exhauste, oil and get all of these fluids to thier proper destination after use. A carbed drawthrough system is about the worst type of turbo system but it will work, a better system would be a blowthrough carb set up, and the best would be some sort of EFI. From what I remember the intakes will interchange between the FWD and RWD engines, though the heads and valve covers are different. The internals between the engines differ in cranks and pistons. If you were to do this either you're asking low boost, 6 psi or so, or a rebuild adding a good set of replacement pistons for an 89 Turbo Trans Am, they used the FWD heads, and only running 12 psi or so. I'd also think your tranny is of questionable durability for anything much more than that. Still be a blast to drive, FWD and booste keeps things interesting for a daily driver like my Supercharged Regal.

Just my $.01, my advice ain't worth anymore than that,

Thank guys, I was offered a 3.8 supercharged complete ex superchager for a grand. It will cost big money for the supercharger I think. Then would need a new PCM and wiring harness. AL.

Well from looking on www.car-parts.com in MD looks like you can pick up the SC for $400 and the computer for about $100 and probably another $50-100 for the harness. However by looking at the same site for a complete engine with SC and ECM it would probably be about $1000 for the whole thing. Some of the other considerations would be the conversion to a high pressure fuel system for the EFI and interfacing of the engine with your tranny or getting the 4T65E to work with your suspention. I'm in the process of putting a turbo 4.1, big bore Buick V6, into a 67 skylark so just trying to pass along the considerations I had to make plus the unique ones from having a FWD car.

    Just a few thoughts,
