My son is in 7th grade his school band is going to play at the race i'm going as a chaparone it should be pretty cool,i'm gonna bring my camera so i'll hopefully get some good pics.
It's a GREAT time! Several years ago, I went to the qualifiers for the Indy 500. It was a blast, we had the greatest time. Make sure you bring a hat for everyone in the group, especially if you plan on going to Gasoline Alley. There's very little shade and if it's a hot day, you'll bake. There's a tradition in Gasoline Alley: Many of the drivers will sign your hat if you can get close enough to them. This is probably difficult on race day, but I have a hat with 4 or 5 signitures on it that I keep on display. A.J. Foyt, Sr. signed my hat, it was his last Indy before he retired. Who knows, maybe someone will sign your son's hat! Also bring good camera and some high speed film if you want pics of the cars as they pass you. Or, use a digital camera. I used film that was too slow and some of the pics are useless. Have fun and post some pics if you get a chance! Paul
Have a great time at the brickyard. Make sure you see the Indianapolis Police Dept Motorcycle Drill team, a truley awesome experience seeing a man on a full dress Electra glide, standing on the seat, arms straight out to his side and going around turn one this way. The pre-race festivites are excellent. "Back Home again in Indiana", ahhhh I can hear it now....
Same seats in the front row of turn two for 20 years now. When the 33 come by at the start it's a rush that is hard to explain. Sitting there I can actually feel the breeze as they go by. 4 hot laps, just one time. That's all I ask......... :Brow:
When I lived in Kokomo I remember hearing of a 2 seater (inline) where they would take you for a ride (4 hotlaps if I remember correctly) They would run upwards of 180 mph. Kind of expensive at a $1000.00 thoough.
Eric, You are right. During the summer you can go to Indy and there are days when they will take you around the track in the two seater. When I took the family over they were running a "special" $400 as opposed to $700. The lady at the sign in desk (and you do sign your life away to do it) told me that it all depends on who is available and in the area but they have had Al Unser Jr. and Michael Andretti at the wheel. The other day in the news a 92 yr old lady from Indy took the ride. I will be taking it myself as soon as I can swing it.
Got back last night 6.30,wow what a personal thrill to be there.the sound is like nothing i've ever heard before just plain awesome. All the kids enjoyed themselves as well,i got some cool pics too. My son is one of the tuba players . the one nearest the infield in the pic.Perfect weather absolutely beautiful.
