Is there some way to test the tach(VOM?) before I put the dash back together?

Yes, if you can start the engine in the car.

Take the brown wire and connect to the neg side of the coil, then attach the metal frame of the tach to a good ground.

If you can't start the engine in the car, do you have access to another early GM? If so the connections will be the same. :bglasses:

    No coil used

I guess I should have mentioned the car has a HEI, and I replaced the underhood wiring harness with one I bought from Year One several years ago, there is no wire under the hood for the tach(I dont think).
    Thanks for any help.
