Here in Canada, I remember MacLeods, Zellers, Woolworths, K-Mart, and others. 7-11 successfully killed the Mom and Pop grocery stores.
I remember my Dad buying my brother a 410 shotgun from Macleods. I bought music and clothes. This was in Prince George, B.C., in the 70's.
I already had an over/under (22/410) dad had got me.

I am also old enough to remember a time before cell phones. You went out for the day to play, or whatever. Unless you called home, you were incommunicado. I moved from Smither to Dease Lake. No one knew how to get hold of me, no phone, just a payphone at the grocery store. A lot of peace, until my step-dad, Milton, decided he hadn't heard from me is a long enough time and came looking for me. Found me in a forestry camp working the East fire. Next day, he was my foreman on the line. Mom cut the apron strings......Dad, not so much.

It's strange that we never gave a thought when we only had land lines..
Today forgetting to bring your cell phone with you when you go out is like your stranded on Gilligan's Island.. You feel helpless.

We had a Zayres, my buddy and I rode our bicycle’s to it from Northfield to Warrensville Hts, it was summer time, we were having fun, an adventure, we were like 11 or so.
I called my Mom from there from the pay phone all proud how far we went, “You get back here, what are you doing going that far?”
It was about 10 miles one way, LOL

I got my DL in 78. Michigan had just started the deposit on all drink bottles and cans. .5 for a can and .10 for a glass bottle. Its how I paid for gas until I got a job.

Of course I remember Zayre. We also had JM Fields when I was a kid and a Bradlees Dept Store and Nichols's when I moved to Utica in 81.

I remember that Hershey bars (and all candy bars) were a nickel when I was young. I remember that they went up to 7 cents too! What are they now - over a buck?

Bradlees.. Oh did I hate that TV commercial with a passion where they showed this actress at her desk and they said "Shoo Mrs. B is Buying"

I remember sitting in a local bar one evening with a few buddies and deciding to drive down to Grand Forks, ND. Crossed the border with a driver's license for ID. Then calling my mom (collect) to let her know where I was. She worried about her kids in those days, and still does today. I don't mind. :)

I used to take those manikins hair piece and tilt it forward or take it off and put it in their hand:p:p:p
An employee saw me do that one time, she didn’t say anything, she chuckled:D

Grocery stores closed at 6. They were open until 9 on Thursday and Friday's. Most stores should be closed all of the time now. Even if they have what you need, the help doesn't know how to find it.

I remember when Coke/Pepsi went from a nickel to a dime - plus 2 cents deposit on the bottle. One of the local kids found out that the Coke machine in the Newton MA Police station stayed at a Nickle. I think Coca-Cola wanted to ticket-proof it's trucks. During non-school days there was a constant parade of kids into the station. Eventually the Police moved the machine to a room not accessible to the public; they were loading it a half-dozen times per day.
