:af:  :af: OK. I lived in my make believe world where Olds were slow and Pontiac only had one or two fast. I started looking around the web and I found that the Olds and Pontiacs are running 8.20's on a 10.5 tire in Limited street trim. they also have a drag radial guy running 8.60's at 3400lbs. Buicks, where you at!?! It makes me want to come home for one day to run down the 1/4. If I could nurse it out of the hole and didn't blow it up, I know I could get a solid 8 sec pass.
Its not all the racers fault! No one ever thinks you can go any faster and keep it together but someone always does. If you make the parts, you make the market. I'm sure someone said the Olds and Pontiac guys didn't have the market for the parts either. Someone came up with the parts and now they have faster cars. I'm mad to know that Buick guy are that much further behind. :af:  :af: I like Olds and Pontiacs. I just might build one of them instead.

I know..... And soon as them pae 500+ horse 350 get popular and the new aluminum intake and heads are done you may end up in 4th place. Man thats gonna suck. Might wanna save your pennies for a small block. Ohh and of course the SBB will take 1st hehehe Oh man thats mean. Just funnin with ya

    Even though its gonna happen.

we are the stepchilds of this hobby,i can see it all the time when i go to shows or just to cruise places,we just dont get any attention as Chevelles,GTO`s,Mopars and so on,its sad but its true.

    Thanks

Yeah but on the bright side it means more cheap parts and cars for us rather than the chebbys, fords, and mopars. Plus how are we gonna be able to drag race 'em if they know we're gonna blow em outta the water.

If the Olds gus didn't have diesel blocks to work with, they'd the same place we are. And the heads...yuck. They have their headaches too, although they did figure out how to get around them.

Buicks make a fast car on a decent budget until you get to say, 11's, then it's pony up the bucks and expect broken parts. I'm expecting my next engine to be a Merlin III or a 427 SBC, heaven forbid. Although a Buick-headed SBC would be kinda fun (and expensive)

Fastest or not I'm way more impressed by the Buick buildups.

Any idiot with an edelbroke catalog and a couple coins can build a C,P, or O :boring: Now a Buick, that takes a REAL man.

I like oldsmobiles, but I still like the styling and looks of buick. Besides, if you had enough money you could make a buick get into the 8's or better. Like clint said, anybody can build an old chevy, pontiac or olds sitting around if they have a few coins and an eldelbrock catalog, but to build a buick, that takes a little more than somebody with an eldelbrock catalog, besides that, the market for buick isn't complete yet, never will be, always will be new stuff rolling in for us from some of our main performance vendors:Brow:

I haven't given up and I probably won't. The green car was never built to go that fast so I'm stepping up a little on my next car (10" slicks, by the way) although at best it will still be as heavy. A lightweight full tube chassis car is in the long range plans, also. The engine is ready for a good set of rods and pistons and when that happens the power can be turned up quite a bit. Also, I need to learn the "tricks of the trade" of high horsepower Buicks! (hopefully not the hard way!)

I could progress at a faster rate, but I decided a while back that I would limit how much I spent at a time, but I am getting there!

    Rick,

I agree with you on this subject. The Olds and Poncho guys have some very quick cars out there. So... you have to ask.. what do they have that we dont have??? Thus far the only thing different is the block. Now with that being said you have to ask... what is killing our blocks. To date it doesn't seem to be HP. From others I have talked with it seems to be the oiling system not being able to keep up the the RPM required to go 160 plus MPH.

At this time I am going just under 154 MPH. With a 32" tire, 4.33 rear gear and a converter that has 5% converter slip I am turning my engine to 7500 rpms. I am sure the car would go faster with a 4.56 gear but I am deathly afraid of 7700 rpms through the traps.

For you guys the run the N20 or blower then you could get away with a gear such as 4.10 or so. That will keep the rpm down. But what we really need to figure out is how we are going to get these engines to RPM. If you dont have it then you will NEVER be able to go faster.

The clip that I posted of Dave Laurer's car is 427 CID on N2O. I am sure he is seeing some 8500 to 8800 trap rpm.

    What do you think??

    32" tires and 4.11 gears = 162mph
    28" tires and 3.55 gears = 164mph
    29" tires and 3.55 gears = 170mph!!

I ordered 3.55 gears based loosely on what I had in the Green car and what I've read about turbo cars. It will be a while before I find out if it's right or not, but I am starting to get wound up again.

I need to quit being so skeered to break sumptin!$!$!$!$!$!$ :spank: :Dou:

    Alan,

At the BPG Norwalk Test&Tune event early in the year I had 4.11s in the car. It went 9.02 and was lazy off the line. So I went home that Thursday night and changed the rear gear to back to the 4.33s. Two days later with NO other changes is went 8.92 and was no where near lazy off the line. I wish I had the extra torque of a blower or N2O to get this thing off of the line then I would be ablt to run the 4.11. Thats why I would love to try a 4.56 gear but I am TOTALLY SCEERED.

Hey, go back to the 4.11 or maybe a 3.90 and put a 75-125HP shot of nitrous to carry it out the first hundred feet or so then run the rest on motor.:Brow: Of course, who's to say you'd have to let go after a 100ft..... 8.50's should be easy. And you don't have to turn a high mph, you just have to get half way quicker and cruse the rest. You could drop your running rpm to 7000-7200 and take some gear out and put just a little nitrous on it. It shouldn't need much. Your pretty light so you should have a big problem pushing through your converter. I would be more scared of turning it 7700 than putting nitrous on it.

The whole point of a power-adder on a Buick is too keep the gearing and rpms down and still be able to go faster. I still have a stock crank on a 464 setup and make over 930HP. The stock stroke is alot less stress on the block and I can still make high HP #'s without a big motor. So, in theory, I should be able to push a stock stroke combination harder since I am putting less rotational strees on the block. I also built my motor with the plan on making my power with nitrous. I left my deck un-cut, only squared, I didn't cut my Stg'3 heads, I run only 11.6 comp, and it all adds up to more material left on the block and heads for strength. Anyways, I'm still PIST! I like the engineering to get a Buick to work, I don't like the expense and aggrevation of trying to figure it out while everyone else goes faster.

RPM's on that Olds? I would guess 7500-7800.
