I'm not going to take you to jail, cuz the judge wouldn't believe me!

    Darryl Roederer Life is good

Back in the old days, I cant remember exactly when... Hey, they say if you can remember that decade, you were not really there.:Brow:

But at any rate, we used to have a circle track here in Louisville. They shut it down in the early 80's. A very close friend of mine who ran quite sucssfully there in a Satellite [road runer clone] with a 426 hemi decided to put the hemi back in it's original car, a 1966 Charger. Problem is the motor was HOT HOT HOT! And the Charger was, well, mostly stock.

The Charger was a factory auto car that he had converted to 4 speed, and put a 383 in it to daily drive it. Tho the 66 Charger was a B-body, it had to be the heaviest "B" they ever made, and was factory equiped with 3.23 gears. It made an interesting combination of a heavy car with highway gears and a race motor that only made power above 4000 rpm. :Brow:

Any rate, early one sunday morning he comes driving thru the neighborhood, and spots me as I'm finishing up my paper route. The sun is just comming up, and the sky is still dark blue with a hint of orange on the horizin. He says "Come on, lets go for a riiiiiide!!!......:TU: " with a big grin on his face.

A few minutes later, were on I-65 south heading out of Louisville. We run about 20 miles out of town and take an exit ramp and do a U-turn to head back to town. At this point, the suns just bright enough that we dont need headlights. Good and bright, but still a few orange and purple clouds in the sky. Traffic was extremely light.

He pulled over to the side of the road, and just sat there revving the engine, hopped out and made a quick check under the hood, and got back in and said "Buckle up!"

We waited about 5 minutes untill there was a HUGE strech of open road in front of us with zero traffic, then he lets it rip.

Right up to the red-line in the first 3 gears,,, this thing is running at warp factor 9. As he hit 4th gear, the rpm's fell back to about 4500, and he was right back in it. Somewhere around 6000 rpm, we came over a little hill in the road,,,, And there,,,, sitting in the median,,,,, shooting a radar gun,,,, was a brand new Buick GN police car:eek2:

He backed out of the throttle for just a second, and looked out the rear view, then he looks over at me... "Well, he got us" he says, and he sort of gives me a shoulder shrug like "oh well":Do No: , and then he's right back in the throttle. He runs it up to 7000 rpm-ish, and holds it there till we ran up on some traffic, backs and drives normal.

Were just driving down the road, it's been about 10 miles since we saw the GN, and were in the slow lane behind another car, when the GN goes screaming by us in the fast lane. The cop sees us, and slams on the brakes. My buddy just politely takes the first louisville exit ramp, and the cop falls in behind us and pulls us over into the gas station parking lot.

The cop comes to the window with a HUGE grin on his face, and asks for both our ID cards, and returns to the GN. About 5 minutes later, another cop car pulls in, and both officers get out. They instructed us to "exit the vehicle". At this point, I was sure we were going to jail.

So they got us both sitting on the hood of the Charger, and the officers are standing side by side right in front of us. The cop from the GN hands us back our ID's, and says "I'v got half a mind to take you both to jail right now... Burry you under it and trhow away the key... The only reason your not going to jail today is because neither of you have anything outstanding, and the judge simply would not believe me.... My GN is the fastest car on the entire police force. It will do 130+ mph, and it took me 5 miles to catch you... And if you had not slowed down, I never would have.... I clocked you at 176 mph, and climbing.... The ONLY reason I even chased you is to find out just what in the hell you got under the hood of that car!!!???!!!" ...Those exact words are forever etched in my mind:laugh:

Instantly, the ice was broken, and all 4 of us began to laugh, if a little uneasy. Turns out both the officers were "hot rod" guys, as well as friends. We spent the next 4 hours talking about cars, examining the hemi, and even taking a short ride in the all new Buick GN... Fortunately, it was a good kind of "short ride" We even ate breakfast together at the waffle house.

Before they let us go, they gave us one last lecture about not ever doing anything like that again on their beat, but we exchanged phone numbers and planned to meet up at the drag strip the next weekend.

To this day, the officers are still my friends. Unfortunately, Robert, who owned the Hemi, accidently killed himself while trying to fix a jamed hand gun about 7 years ago.

    Ahhhh.... Memeoris!

Several years ago when I worked at a Lincoln Mercury dealership in New Orleans,we had the contract for the NOPD for service on their vehicles.

We were doing a major recalibration on the Crown Vics in 98/99 for the transmissions. We have to limit them to 120 mph due to a problem with the throw out bearings.

Anyway,in Dist 2 I went to drop off and pick up a few cars to calibrate them, when I looked in the yard and saw a Buick GN with a plain clothes cop getting out.Dude was huge,at least 6'3" and must have been a good 250 pounds.

I asked him about the car and he told me they nabbed it in a drug bust. Not sure how he got the car as a cop car,but said he never lost a high speed chase.I made sure I never went thru his area at over the speed limit.
