    Hi all,
I have been beating my head on the wall trying to fix this problem! Recently, I developed a miss at all rpm's. Within a few days (starting it daily), it would barely run. Smells as if someonehas dumped gas all over but I don't see any coming from the vent tubes or anything. Also motor sputters and misses at all rpm's, and blows blackish/gray smoke like a diesel, won't idle at all, you have to keep pumping a little on the throttle to even keep it running. The plugs all are soaked with fuel when they are removed, you can actually tip them over and a little fuel with run out. Other than that, they do look sooty somewhat. Cleaned the plugs, swapped from MSD6AL to HEI and back, and swapped coils. I think it is getting good spark. I am running a Holley 950hp that was built by BIGGS carbs ( JW can attest that it was all set up right). When I took the float bowls off, I found that the secondary float was soaked with gas. Where it is notched for the jet extensions, the float had orange scale on it and it was deteriorated. And full of gas. I replaced the float, blew out the passages with air, and pulled the body off and did the same. Put it all back together and it is still doing the same thing. I have the regulator set at 7psi and no fuel leaks. I think the crap on the secondary float and deterioration might have been from some octane booster. I don't know what else it could be! After I got the engine back from JW, I used only 93 octane Amoco. The booster was run on the previous setup. I am waiting for someone to come over so I can recheck the float levels since it won't run without feathering the throttle constantly. Does anyone have any ideas about this? I cleaned but haven't replaced the plugs. They are NGK ur4's. Also this setup has less than a thousand miles on it. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a stuck float to me.

I am going to pull the bowls off again. Strange thing is, it seems to run just a little better everytime I start it.......... We will see...

Little Tip: When replacing a Holly secondary fuel bowl with notched floats for clearing jet extensions....remove the fuel level sight plug and use a small screwdriver (or something) to hold the float up so it clears the extensions and doesn't get in a bind.

If your original float failed, and you replaced it but it is in a bind--it will exhibit the same conditions as a failed float.

    Just a thought. :)

    Also, verify float level.

A very good thought indeed! I will be pulling the bowls again today, so I will try that when I put them back on. Thanks for the idea!

    Change the oil

Yes i would change the oil in the motor with that much gas dumping into the intake its a wonder it did not wash the rings out in the motor. Your oil in the motor is probably well mixed with unburnt gas. Not good for rings and bearings....:(
