Follow the upper rad hose to the water crossover on the front of the engine. Remove the hose from that point and you'll see the thermostat inside the housing. Remove the two bolts holding the thermostat housing to the crossover and fish out the old 'stat.

Just follow the upper radiator hose to the housing on the block, it would be there :TU:

OK...put your hand on the top radiator hose and then move your hand to the engine. When you get your hand is at the end of Mr.Hose you are at the place were Mr.Thermostat lives.

Be careful when waking up Mr.Thermostat he maybe still hibenating and is knowen to crew up knuckles when he is awoken. Also make sure the engine is off and the cooling system is drianed before hunting down that raskelly Mr.Thermostat.

LOL what can I say it's a quiet day and I have been baby sitting.

Make sure to install the new one in the right direction! There should be an arrow showing flow toward the radiator on it.

In my very foggy memory it seems the thermostat for the 401/425 is larger than the standard thermostat. I only mention this because you may need to order it, my local auto parts does not stock it.

    Correct!
401-425 thermostat is the same as the one used in 1955-78 Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth V8's

I don't think you are an idiot, just inexperienced and uninformed.:) An idiot would strip/crossthread/break the bolts, attemp to put it in backwards or use the wrong part, then forget to put the coolant back in, run and overheat the motor.

Yeah, V8Buick is as entertaining as it is informative, which is what makes it so much fun. And I've always believed that there is no such thing as a stupid question if you learn something from it. We've all been there.

Oh yes indeed we have. My idiocy lies in the electrical section of these cars. Just ask Larry the "Wizard". I can't imagine how many times he's probably rolled his eyes replying to me. :Dou:

Hey!!!!!! You shouldn't talk about me like that behind my back!

We have ALL been "idiots" at one time or another....

    Stripped bolts- CHECK!
    Cross threadded bolts- CHECK!
    Broke bolts- CHECK!
Put in wrong part or on backwards- CHECK
Forgot to put put coolant in and burnt up a motor- ....uuuumm.... no.

-but 4 out of 5 still qualifies me as an "idiot", right?

Now I feel like the subject of Bill Engval's "Here's your sign"!

How about forgot to get a new gasket when at the parts place.
Which of course means another trip!
One trip per project? Batting average -50 % at best.
More than once been saved by the parts guy, reminding me.

First off I too thought the title was hilarious because I have uttered those words before. The only thing that would have made it better::Dou:.Which so happens to be one of my favorite/most used smilies judging from this post im not the only one.
You are not a idiot, what I do applaud is your humility because it will help you more than all the talent you could ask for.
If you stay here long enough you will learn more than you want to, the end of which results in a long trail of receipts that you wont want to ever add up.:TU:

I also agree that the head slapping smile :Dou: is my favorite. I read the threads for years before i got the nerve to join and ask the questions that i thought would be stupid by the wizened veterans here. And as for all the info learned on this site, I'll second that about the endless supply of receipts that come with all the knowledge, resulting in my car being apart, partially together, apart again, "cuz, you know, if it's already this far apart, it wouldn't be much more to repair "that" part, and so on.
and so on...............and so on. But the light at the end of the tunnel is getting larger (proportionately to the funds getting smaller). Rick
