I got the comp 9000 from TA, had it curved too. Best dist cap if u ask me. I also have the Hye fire, Mallory E core coil. But MSD wires. Mallory wires are hard to find. Does Mallory make the plasma box to go with it yet.

Can you tell us, why the MSD Pro Billet distributor caps are worn out so quickly? I hear everyone overhere complain about this. On my former engine I had a E-spark conversion kit, and I made many many more miles with that engine then the new one and still the MSD cap wheresout much more quickly. Is this something that is only MSD related, or is it related do the higher spark or higher rpm range of an more performance orientated distributor and cap?

    Is the cap vented?

Mmm I believe they are. A friend of mine who has a 72 GS to, his one was so rusted that he had collyflower rust partikels on it.
On that car and also mine the wear of the contact stifts inside the cap and also the rotor is quite extensive, and so will wear out quite soon, if it were a daily driver you would need new ones every couple of months or so.
So the question is are these different quality and mainly for race use? Or are these MSD parts sub standard to others?

I know the smaller the cap the more chance of another terminal pulling away some of the spark. The Mallory comp 9000 is the largest cap u can get. Could also be some grease or oil residue wicking up into your cap, that would be easy to see though. Bad alignment , and possibly too close rotor to wire terminal pole.
If all else fails one might say dam Chinese brass.

I use MSD for a while now, so my guess is its the Chinese brass fault! Can't blame the Buick Torque...mmm..maybe I can! :Brow:

Ware 's that Mallory guy, I want to ask him if Mallory is ever going to make a plasma boost before MSD does. Ignition solutions has them but you have to go through one of there dealers, so far the best i can find is 350 bucks. its a 2 wire set up , works with spark box , it will multiple fire your multiple fire!

MSD 5 fix (my fault, I disregarded MSD's warning about using a 5 with HEI. Excess primary current due to low resistance of coil overloaded the MSD box.)

The 5s and the 6Ts should be repairable. The 6 series is way more complex than the 5, and SOME of the 6 series are potted--which means non-repairable. The 6T shouldn't be potted, though.

I currently have a crane electric conversion kit in a stock points distributor w a pertronix coil. straight 12v from fire wall for key on, 12 volts from starter for cranking. looking at a complete msd package. digital 6AL, wires, blaster 2 coil, and vac advance distributor. from SK speed on Long Island. They have treated me pretty well over the years and have packages in their new summer catalogue.
The current system works well so far. Just trying to dial car in better and control igniton and make easy adjustments.

Just installed a Pertronix Ignitor 111 multi spark module in my HEI and wow!
For $70, I get amazing cold idle and smooth warm idle. The rpm can drop to 400 rpm and catch back up without dying. Plus rev limiter. Revs faster too.

I've been using MSD 6A and billet distributor and MSD's Blaster coil since the early 90's, no issues.
New MSD cap and rotor every couple years.

The point of this thread is just about mute anymore. MSD pretty much owns the industry now. Correct me if I am wrong but Mallory is gone, Accel too. Crane is back but try to find one. Anything else is almost fringe elements. Not to say that ICE, and some others are not good but MSD is the 800 pound gorilla now.

Be VERY CAREFUL with MSD caps 'n' rotors--and everything else. The last Genuine MSD cap I bought was sourced from Communist China. I sent it back, and bought Standard instead. Given the two recent changes of ownership, Communist content in the MSD line is only going to get worse.

The company that owns MSD also bought Mallory, Accel, Mr Gasket, and some others. And then the whole works got sold to Holley. I don't doubt they will merge product lines. There are some independents, and some "fringe" manufacturers. The Crane ignition line was pawned-off to Comp Cams and then decimated. What remains is sold under the FAST brand-name.
