I picked up a nice Tilt Column for my new to me 72 Skylark. It was removed from a 71 Skylark and I would like to swap Ignition Lock Cylinders from my 72 into the 71 Tilt Column after I get it color matched by a buddy at a Local Body Shop. I really can't remember how to remove the Cylinder and thought I would ask before I break something :puzzled: I thought you just pushed on a tab inside the column or used a Paper Clip or something and push on a tab and turn the Cylinder right out. Can someone please help and point me in the right direction here?

    Thanks
    Dom

Thanks for your help guys. I was hoping the Lock Plate and Turn Signal switch could stay intact. It looks like all that stuff has to be removed first though :ball:

Got it, thanks guys. Buddy at my Local Body Shop matched the dark brown almost perfectly, Satin Finish and all. Just need to find a nice dark brown Sport Steering Wheel now and I'm all set, but I will use the old original wheel on the new Tilt until I find one.

Push in on that silver strip (tab) while turning the Lock Cylinder with the key and turn it to the start position and pull out on the Ignition Lock Cylinder :TU:

    Good Luck

Use a small screwdriver to clear the casting flash which is typical which blocks your view of the key cylinder "tang"

Just depress the tang gently with the small screwdriver and pull with your left hand. It will slide right out. Does not have to be in any position. Illustration shown here is correct.

    Reread my sentence

"use a small screwdriver INSTEAD of the metal strip"

Depress the key cylinder "tang" with the screwdriver and then pull out the cylinder. Read the article!

When you have everything removed like in the service manual pic above, you will see a vertical "slot" about 1/2" tall and maybe 1/8" wide. If the switch has never been replaced, it probbaly will have a thin "floor" at the bottom of that slot. You need to break through that floor with your screwdriver, and then your screwdriver will depress a tab in the side of the lock cylinder that will let it pull out of the column. In the pic above, the "small steel strip" is being pushed into the slot where you will use your little screwdriver.

    Hey everyone,

I see this thread has been dead for quite a while now but I've got a problem involving the ignition switch.
The ignition switch in my '70 skylark 350 will sometimes not turn back to the off position.
It starts fine without any problems and drives fine but when I want to shut her down, the entire switch is stuck in the "contact/run" position.
Sometimes it does this and most of the times I can just turn the key and she will shut down but it is really anoying if you're standing there unable to shut your car down :)
Hope you will be able to tell me how I can get the switch out of the steering column to inspect it (it is a automatic so the transmission lever is also there)

    Thanks,

    Bardo

You can remove the key cylinder and turn the key tang inside the column...if it does not retract to "off"...your ignition switch on top of the column below the speedo needs to be replaced...otherwise bad key cylinder.
