What is the closest thing to an "ideal gear ratio" for a 455/automatic car? I have a 69 Skylark w/TH400 Switch pitch 3000.HP rating will be 500-575. Seems like 3:42's are the favorite around here...I want to run this car at the drag strip and have fun on the street as well...anyone reccomend 3:73's?

    Thanks

Yes, 3.73's, and I'll tell you why. If you run a 28" tire, the 3.73's are effectively 3.55's. That is what I have, along with a Gear Vendors Overdrive, of course. The gear ratio can be controlled with tire height. You can go with a 26" tire if you want the full 3.73.

Yea don't forget the tire size part. And 3.55s was ruled the best overall by hotrod years ago during a shoot out between street n strip.

Thanks guys....one more question: would a 4000 SP be too much?

I don't know anyone who makes a SP converter that stalls that high. I believe the one I have is the best one around. It's a modified 12" ST300 converter that I got from Tri Shield Performance. It stalls about 3000-3200 on high, and about 1800 low. If you can find a 12" ST300 converter, send it to Jim Weise at www.trishieldperf.com He has a local converter guy that knows his way around a switch pitch converter.

Don't have a clue but it sure sounds like fun, Id bet though if it hooks well you will have a nice view of the sky. Might need to cut a hole in the floor so you can see where your going ;)
