    I have exhausted all my patients trying to find numbers on the frame, firewall, tranny, rear and the like. Not one number has come up good. Part of a selection sheet has been found; however, there are not enough peices to make any sense.

    I know the car is legit based on the history of the car; I destroyed the original Stage 1 motor 20 years ago. The tranny has been changed (why the changed the case I don't know). The rear end has been changed (posi is a thing of the past). I think the gears are out of a YUGO.

    I cannot find a number on the firewall; not that I think that matters, I have the VIN # and the cowl tag. Where is the number located on the frame? Where is the number located on the gas tank? Are there any other places to look for "hidden numbers".

    I know the 71's are not documented with Buick; but, has anyone tried to get information from Dealers? If so, how? Could the cars be tracked via a trucking company, via manifest numbers of sorts? There has to be a way to get the original invoice for this car.

    Some way, some how, I need documents. With all the Buick knowhow out there, someones got to come through.

    The factory records for a 70 were save fron the dumpster by Sloan for the first 6 months of the car year. Wayne Roberts saved the last 6 months for the 70 year. 1971 got dumped as far as I know.

    Frame number can be seen with a mirror on the drivers side in front of the post.

    Jim;

    About how far back would you say the number is? I looked in front of (and around) the driver's side frame next to the firewall. If you had a photo of the location it would probably save me two hours of searching.

    What do you think of my dealership notification idea posted earlier? Am I grasping at straws?

    Good to see you on the board Len :TU:

    Try contacting the NY DMV to determine if they can do a title search on your car. It may be a good starting point for you.

    Good Luck (and drop that gas tank!)

    The confusion may be that I am talking about on top thus the need for the mirror.

    Here's a hint on the frame # location.

    It will only tell you BB or SB.

    If you already know the car's history, it may not buy you much.

    Marco;

    The tank has been out. I cleaned off the entire top of the tank. No numbers found. I did notice a red circle with, what appears to be, a "27" in the circle.

    Where would the numbers/letters be?

    Tranny

    Marco;

    The tranny we talked about on Wednesday has 26 teeth input with 32 teeth output and no grooves. Based on the info from Muncie it seems to be a M-22. What do you think. A M-20 case with M-22 guts?

    Not trying to rain on your parade but the only way to tell an M22 transmission is to pull the side cover and look at the gears. Hre is a link to a site to help you determine what you have.

    Good luck,

    I would expect nothing less than it to turn out to be anything but the M-22. I will open the case to see the gears, I was just waiting to see if anything else would break, fall off, implode first.

    I would not be suprised to find a hamster on a wheel or two rubber bands instead of the gears.

    Thanks.

    Len

    P.S. Got to keep it light, if you saw the condition of my car, you would understand.

    Have you looked behind the dash bezel for a broadcast sheet? I have found several there in the past from Flint built cars. One of those was a 71 Stage 1. It's on the feft side in the area by the air vent, rolled up and tucked into a small opening in the dash framework.

    Good luck with your search.

    Len,
    The buildsheet that is stuffed up in the dash won't prove your car is a Stage 1, but the one on top the gas tank will. Sometimes these same sheets are found in other areas of the car, like under the carpets. I decode these sheets.
    Maybe you can send me a copy of the "selection sheet" you found and I can make some sense out of it. You might be surprised.
    Duane

    PS. I offered to do this before, when you posted on the BPG site.

    If that is the thick paper type sheet; I found part of that in that area last week. It is in pieces and doesn't tell me anything. I took the vents out and everything else. The only thing remaining in the front is the steering wheel and the defroster/defogger vent. The insulation has been removed behind.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks for your help.

    Duane;

    There is no sheet on top of the tank. I will try to scan the parts of the sheets in on Monday. My scanner is a feed type and will not work well with the old brittle paper. If you can make anything out of it, great.

    I know I am grasping at straws; but, if the car, for some strange reason, was sold in Canada would they have a record? I don't believe that this is the case; however, it would be like buying a lottery ticket. Maybe I would win the 71 GS Stage

    Len,
    The thick paper type is the one that usually is stuffed up in the dash and won't help with your Stage 1 "Documentation" search, although it does give other info.
    The one you are looking for is either a Production Order Body Final or a Production Order Chassis Paint.

    Len,
    Yes, if your car was originally delivered to Canada then you can get a complete list of every option and the dealer number that it was shipped to. You can contact GM of Canada Limited, Phone #(905)-644-4060 or (905)-644-3387, or by Fax (905)-644-5436 Mon-Fri from 7:30-5:00 pm EST.
    Hope this helps.

    Re: Tranny

    All we could tell from the case was the stamping -

    P0B16A

    which breaks down -
    P - Muncie
    0 - Model Year 1970
    B16 - Assembled February (B) 16th
    A - M20

    It's possible that someone reused this M20 case for M22 gears :Do No:

    This quote taken from the '5speeds' website -
    I hope you find something on your car :TU: Either way, get that car fixed. We usually have a fall picnic in the eastern PA area (BPG region #1). Please join us either way. :beer

    Just a note; spoke to George at GM in Canada. No luck, the car was born, sold and lives in the great US of A.

    So much for the lottery.

    Still working on tracking it down.
