So my generator was not working, took it apart cleaned it up, Generator was working great, Ammeter showed no charge, removed and replaced voltage regulator and it stared charging, so much so it wont stop any thing over 5 miles or so and it goes to full charge. Smells like something burning.......(wiring)

    did you polarize the regulator?

Looks like that regulator is faulty; if it isn't the regulator, then the battery is junk and the generator is throwing a charge (and mica) into a hole. Make sure the battery is up to snuff and then go after the regulator. If the needle swung over to full charge, then polarity isn't the issue.

You gotta polarize the generator.... we used to spin them up to speed and then touch a wire ,just briefly to the gen bracket...

polarized it X2, took generator back apart looked at wiring and put another regulaor on same results. checked battery charge and its 12-13

I remember when the voltage regulator would stick. Dad would rap the regulator with his knuckles until the ammeter dropped back down.

I would say your problem is in the regulator. NAPA might have one that will work. The NAPA regulator won't have the DelcoRemy script of the original cover.......

well im guessing the regulator had a closed position and caused ryn away charge to the battery, overheating the generator..... really like the idea of a powermaster one wire alternator this is about the 4th rebuild or faulty regulator

We went through three before it finally settled down. My current gen/reg pair has been in the car ten years now with no problem.

Shorted field coils in the generator will cause this. Have the parts checked before throwing more parts at it.

The mechanical regulators on the market these days are crap...pure crap. It's common to go thru 3-4 to find one good one.:Dou:

I may hold the world record on that one. I finally got a good regulator for a '67 Ford on the seventh try.

What would it take to rebuild a regulator?

An old guy,an even older tester,an even older stash of parts and $100+
There is a company that makes an electronic generator regulator, shiney chrome flat unit...but they work.:beer
