Can someone help me out? The wheel on the left is the style wheel I have on my '70 Skylark 350; the code on the back reads:

    070579 14 X 6 JJT
    991 MW6 DOT B

the code on the wheel on the right reads:

    100777 14 X 6 JJT
    914 MW6 DOT F

I highlighted the area where the wheels differ, one is deeper in the circled area than the other. Can someone tell me what I should be looking for to match the wheels I have? What about the wheel on the right?
    Thanks

Hey Gary, the one on the right looks like an original '70 style ralley-- no step on the outside of the black insert. Flip them over, lay a straightedge across the edge of the back of the wheel and measure the backspacing from the straightedge to the back of the mounting area of the wheel (where the bolt holes are) originals are around 4 1/4 - 4 1/2 inches and later regal- type ralleys have 3 1/2". That wheel pictured on the left may be a regal wheel OR a mid- '70s wheel if it doesn't have 3 1/2" of backspacing. I don't know the codes you mentioned but some on here do..... deciphering those would really help.........

Hey Dan, right again! Measured as you suggested and I guess I have Regal wheels on my Skylark. I'll have to see if I can make a tradee with someone who needs a Skylark wheel.
    Thanks for your help!

Glad to help, Gary-- I bought my first '70 Skylark in 1987 and have really never been distracted by other old makes and models so some peoples' questions seem to ring a bell sometimes!!!!! I bought a set of those '78-'87 'Regal' ralleys at a swap meet way back when for 'cheap' and discovered the differences comparing them with the originals on my car. At least I resold them for a profit!!!! Some people mistake the Regal wheels for 14x7 wheels because they have that 1" more offset...... They look just fine on our cars but upset the 'purist' in us, I guess.........

Y'know, I was wondering why when I took my car to a show back in NY, a guy said I had the wrong wheels on my car?

My journey to getting the wheels was a long one, the first set were given to me by a good friend and long time Buick guy because the car had the original caps on it. They were the "correct" rallyes. But I wanted the "deep" rims so I started buying them whenever I saw them and eventually ended up with a complete set, although only 2 were really good. Then I bought a nice one from a board member to match what I had and continued looking until I found the one I just bought, from a different board member, which although correct doesn't match. The board member I bought the matching one from just got his hands on another one for me so that should be the end of it. Except now I have one nice "correct" wheel that I'll have to sell.

Bottom line, I probably should have stayed with the hubcaps instead of wanting to look cool.

The ralley wheels beat hubcaps any day in my book, correct type or not. I put 15X7 ralleys and 60 series tires on my convertible, mostly to improve the handling but I've always liked how they fill up the wheelwells better. The correct 14x6 wheels sure are skinny on a 70-72 car-- but the 'Regal' wheels appear wider, actually making the car look a little better, in my opinion. It just depends on how the car is used, driver, show car or ?????

Which hubcaps did your car have, the dogdish or full-wheelcover "volcano" caps? My Stage 1 car actually was built with the little dogdish caps according to the build sheet-- I might put together a set if I find any good ones....

    Regal Rallyes

I thought you finally had 4 of one type?

Since the Rallyes are not the original equipment for your car, why does it matter if you have Regal wheels or Skylark wheels. Blue sky made a good point, the extra offset makes the tires look wider, and better. If I were you I'd stick with em. :bglasses:

I do have 4 on the car, one is not so hot. I like the Regal look better and since it's not a concours car, I'll stick with them. That's why I'm looking for a good 4th Regal wheel. Any luck w/Simone or Crazy Mike? Gold for the Mrs., eh? Life is good.

    BTW, I like your Avatar!
