70 Skylark.. What I have now is a giant hole in the dash where the radio used to be and two holes in the back where 6x9 speakers could go. That's it. I just want something modern, but on a budget.

I would like to install a head unit in the giant hole SOMEHOW??? 6x9s in the rear. And then something up front??? Not sure what i will do about an antenna??

If I want more bass later I can deal with that then.

    Any ideas?

    Jay

When I got my car (70 Skylark) and had some kind of modern stereo in it. The skylark bezel was already attached, the mounting tabs for the stock radio were bent down. It was working, I think there's a pair of some kind of triaxials in it, maybe a special speaker in the front. Truth is I'm deaf, so I just pulled it all and put a stock FM + underdash 8 track in it. I would let it go cheap. You want me to look + give you specifics + a price? Shipping would be expensive for the speakers...they looked like some kind of "It's all about the bass" deals lol

Ipod, modern day sound at a fraction of the cost. speakers and tape not included.

    sorry, i couldn't resist. :TU:.
There are retro boxes you can install to accomodate most heads. I would put the bulk of your budget into the speakers and wires. I listen to the radio 99% of the time
so a clean factory am/fm followed by the best wire, amp and speakers that will fit. thump the trunk with a 12" bass.

My biggest hurdle is the giant hole. Crutchfield doesn't have or know of anything. I don't want something that looks old, and has minimal features. May just stick an amp somewhere and do the pandora thing with my phone and find a delete plate.

Is it the factory hole in the dash ? you could put the original back in as a dummy. run a bluetooth under the seat or in the trunk and run your playlist or pandora from that. got a pic of that dash-hole ?:eek2:

    It's just the factory hole..

I did find this, and I do have the plastic plate the the radio mounted to.

That's the kind of installation that was in my car. It was clean, it was modern, it worked fine. But...I'm deaf...I don't listen to the radio, I just watch the tach + hum.

The face plate looks easy enough, those kick plates are going to be expensive but very cool. as long as your willing to cut out the factory dash it's just a flat plate. polished aluminum would be sweet. GL Note, that plastic piece is nice and easy to replace if ever going back to stock. not unobtainable

I'm very interested to know more. I'll PM you. If you already have a faceplate that is cut and fitted for a standard sized receiver, I'm interested.

I thought it would be nice to have something modern looking on the dash since I'm installing modern buckets with a nice console. I wish there were an alternative to the fabric headliner too.. I'm not a fan.

Jay, here is the unit + bezel I have. It's a JVC AM/FM CD KD-G120 45W x 4 or 17 x 4RMS, rear woofie ability, you can google for more info. Found 1 speaker the frt 4x10 coax w/ the modified brkt that held it. I know there are 2 6x9 oval I think triax someplace. Bezel chrome is not great. I would take 25. for the head w/bezel, 5.00 a speaker + SH. It was working when I got the car.
