I have a 400 out of a 72 wagon, short tail shaft. my yoke going in I get about an inch in, looked inside the yoke its rusty. SoI think I need to replace that to fit. 32 spline ?

350 trans are smaller circumference , right ? Is this the 27 spline ?

Also seems like my stock drive shaft is too long even if it fit all the way in.

Does the rear end tilt up to make the driveshaft on the same plane ?

    Thanks in advance

It operates on different levels but ideally they will be parallel to each other

There are two different th400 yokes early small od dia and the later more common large od.

There should be a minimum of 1in engagement on the output shaft and an in of slack b4 bottoming out in the trans if its between those parameters your good regarding engagement

ok, I must have a small diameter tail shaft and as luck would have I have large diameter yokes. I have 2 and they stop at the inside diameter where the shaft emerges from the trans. thanks

    Some pictures

Just confirming this is a 400.

when you say small dia , is does it have fewer splines in the yoke or made with less thickness of metal ?
    thanks

    The od is smaller

From this picture the shaft in the transmission is large. I have 2 yokes that fit but they hit the inside tail shaft housing. I have other yokes but they only fit a th350. Smaller diameter.

Do I have an odd tail shaft housing. ?

You have the small housing yes,..I've got a few of them myself where I've taken them off to go to the larger,..that out put shaft is also out to far,..not sure what's going on there

ok , there is some answer. so i'm pulling this trans if the output shaft is sticking out.

The small dia yoke measures 1.68 the standard and what you have is 1.87

The out put is normally only 1/2 in at the most beyond the seal

The seal isn't present so that is probably making it look much worse

Yes on the long tail shaft but it was switched when built.

There's only 2 dia if your yoke doesn't slide in the housing then you will either need to change the housing or get the 1.68 yoke,..about the same money either way
