I just bought a posi 9 3/8 off of billebuick and tonight i finally got it in the garage.......it's gonna be used as reference for a 9" i'm having built...anyways, i'll post some pics later, but holy crap is that ring huge! of course the only other diff i've ever looked at was the 7 5/8 in my camaro uzzled: but still, i was taken aback at the size.....too bad it's only a 2.56 or whatever(my count was like 40 teeth to 15 if that sounds right) that's it....nothing too exciting.....
Anyone know if anybody has ever busted one of these rears? I know people have fragged U-joints and driveshafts (I'm one of them), but never heard of one of these monster actually breaking. Thanks,
Hot Rod TV Editor Kevin Oeste was tooling down the I15 in LA when the rear in his 69 Riv just completely grenaded. I can't recall if his was a posi or not. Only ine I've ever heard of. knock wood
 that looks like it only has a 10 bolt cover  uzzled: 9 3/8's have 12 two at the bottom and their should be a flang that ths driveshaft bolts too not the u straps like in the pix........ sure you have a 9 3/8
Small correction: 70 and earlier rears had the 10 bolt cover - Yardley's Rear: You probably kow what our 71 and up rears look like:grin: 12 bolts on the cover:beer
What did they say about the Titanic? Yeah! My buddy in high school went through 2 of them in his '70 riv. And later when I owned the car I busted 1. At least they were easy to find back then. Too much winding it out in first and chirping the tires at 55 MPH is all I can attribute it to. I haven't done very much of that in my current Riv. Makes me nervous. Though, It sure is fun! :3gears:
I've had the privelege to run one dry and damage a bearing. I couldn't get the axle shaft out, and I needed the brakes for my replcement axle so I sawed it off. I would love to do it again
That's a picture of the big bad boy. Twelve bolts of big bertha. I'm thinking '70 was a 10-bolt. At least on the Riv I once knew.
I once took the guts from mine to a guy who sets up rear ends for race cars. He thought this rear end was really wierd, he said it looked to him like a 12 bolt with a 10 bolt cover. I never got into building race cars, so I wouldn't know the difference.........I just count the bolts
if you saw that thing up close there would be no doubt as to it size! i gave it to the guy building my 9" rear so he could use it for the dimensions and whatnot, and he was laughing cuz he was saying i'd pry save weight going to the 9 inch......31 spline axle, 3.90 gears, detroit locker, heavy duty pinion yolk or whatever they're called, heavy duty driveshaft(needs to be longer with the 9") ford racing disc brakes, should be pretty sweet!
i will definetly keep you updated with pics.....actually, i guess it's almost done but wasn't expecting it so fast so i told them to slow down till i get the money! it's a local guy, and he had most of the stuff already......kind of expensive until you realize the housing is custom fabbed and still less than i could buy a bolt in 9" for my camaro from dts or curry! josh
The 3.07 ratio has 43 teeth on the ring gear and 14 teeth on the pinion. The 3.42 ratio has 41 teeth on the ring gear and 12 teeth on the pinion. Up to 1970 the ring gear was held on with 12 bolts even though the case only has 10. The designation "12 bolt" does not refer to the number of bolts holding the cover on, but instead the number of bolts holding the ring gear on. It just so happens that USUALLY in the GM world they are the same. But not for the early Buicks.
