Just when I thought I got a ticket for everything, I got one for noxious weeds on my field....canada thistle to be specific.
Seems strange when the county property I border has tons of them and that's probably where they came from. $500 or 3 mos in the slammer. I guess I'll be in jail for posession of weed(s).

They want them gone in 2 weeks......

The county came down for a site check for my garage I want to build.....I figured they'd write me up for old tires on property or junk cars....hmm, maybe those are in the mail.:blast:

They make me ill because it costs me about 15 dollars per acre to control them. Doesnt sound bad until you spray about 4000 acres. They are weeds that take over any area they are in . In some areas dandelions are one of them because of this.Root system protects itself so they are just about impossible to actually kill. Most sprays only kill the top but theay come back from the roots. We have property with leafy spurge on it that has been sprayed for about 50 years and its still there. ED K

I may call some lawyers and find a way to blame city property for infecting your. Make them pay for removal.

That or see if the fire department will give you a permit to burn the field off.

They say no controlled burning allowed.....how bout uncontrolled? HeHe

Talked to the county....they said they will gladly spray.....$300 per half acre.....I told them where to go.
They say if I get someone to mow they had better come back in Aug because the thistle will be back and so will they......

not your fault the poison you used was flammable and who knows how it got sparked off but...

I set a big azz field on fire once as a kid. We were having match wars and never even thought about it. About 20 mis later the field was gone, black and the fire department was scratching their heads.

oops. kids and matches = fire.

I think I'll pass on the fire.....called the fire dept and they can do it if I get a permit but there is a fire ban from May to September.

Renting a bush/brush hog might be the ticket.....

What is the land used for? You could have a farmer disc it all under real good. And then re plant it with what ever. If your a hunter you could make deer plots. Or plant other types of plants to attract animals.

Sounds like your gonna end up spending time and money on this forever. Time is the worst one of the bunch. Might want to come up with a permanent solution.

That is a strange law, but I guess the weed is bad news. We have one here locally too. It grows along hwys and harbors something damaging to tobacco plants. Men are paid to drive around each week and check the sides of state hwys to spot the weed. They then flag off the area so the ride-away mowing crew doesn't cut it and spread it to more ares via the equipment. Guess they will start writing tickets here for it growing on our propterty too soon! May be God's way of keeping lung cancer down in smokers????

I think letting a local farmer use the fields would be your best bet the land can be usefull plus you might be able to make a few bucks in the process my inlaws used to farm a couple thousand acres half they owned the other was leased they farmed all of the neighboring farms and split the crops just my 2 cents I dont know if they do this in your neck of the woods but around here you get a tax break for "agriculture" land they call it the clean and green act

Bruce how big of an area are you talking about. If you spray canadian thistle with roundup herbicide at 1 quart to the acre mixed with 5 gallons of water per acre you have a good chance of killing it, CAUTION this will kill everything you spray it on. You will have to replant grass or whatever. There is some other chemicals you can use but nothing will kill the roots. They are a self protecting plant. Any questions feel free to pm me ED K

Ed, You mean business mixing that Monsanto Roundup that strong! I use a couple of hundred gallons of it per year on the farm. Usually 1 qt. per acre @ 1 oz. per gallon of water. On fence rows, 2 oz. per gallon water. I also use a chemical on pastures and brush called Crossbow. It only kills broad leaf plants and will leave the grass alone. A chemical called Velpar will hurt the roots along with being taken in through the foilage, but is not commonly used anymore. I am sure it is a tough weed, but with repeated spraying, I think you could eventually get it.

Tough weed! A 15' deep root would be hard to kill. My father's place had a pesky vine on it years back that had some roots around 6 feet deep. I never completely killed it, but several sprayings per year kept it weak and under control. The 2-4-D chemical they mentioned replaced the 2-4-5-T that was used in Vietnam. My father used the old stuff and it was awesome, but had agent orange to deal with. The 2-4-D works similar to the Crossbow. Since it also comes up from seed, you could use a pre-emergent also when spraying. It will prevent any more seed from germanating. Of course, you may not want to spray anything! Just some opinions to help out. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the info......got a guy coming to cut it down......200 bucks for the half acre. County offered to spray it for me.....how nice of them!.......for $300.

I think after it's cut I'll spot spray the thistle as it comes up.....at least that's the plan.

    I ain't no farmer.....I'm a lover.....of cars.:beer
