I figured out where that screeching noise came from

    I've had some really horrible screeching noise coming from somewhere on the car for quite some time now. I initially though that the rear axle needed a restoration - and it did for a number of reasons - but that's not where the noise was coming from.

    The culprit was a broken outer front wheel bearing.

    I'm quite impressed that I could even drive with this (links to an external site as I can't attach images for some reason):

    Wow, that is ugly! Glad nothing more serious came from it.

    When you tear it down, be sure to check the spindle. Hope you didn't cut a groove in it.

    Yep...hopefully screeching was bearing noise...not seized bearing turning on spindle...good luck with your repair.

    I lucked out and the spindle is fine. And now I also know what a broken front wheel bearing sounds like. :)
