I just purchased a rear axle with posi for $100cdn $$ however I cannot identify the gear ratio. It had a tag indicating it came from a 1972 Buick Electra and the axle is 57" +- inside to inside of drum. It has the ss tag and is 12 bolt cover. It measures 9 3/8 +-. I marked the shaft and the axle and rotated it to a little less than 3 turns.

    Markings -
-I cannot find anything on the axle.

-It has kinda yellow/orange paint on both the ring gear and pinion

-the ring gear yellow/orange paint has 3 1 1 hand painted

-the ring gear has numbers stamped 41814 CN MH 2582 Some numbers are hard to read like the 8 could be a 6, the letters are hard to read too, the N could be an H.

I also have some stupid questions :Dou:
1-What is the best gear ratio for performance?
    2-can I swap a 1972 9 3/8 posi into a 1970 riviera axle?

    1. A lot of people love 3.23's They are better on the highway than 3.42's and give you a better launch than 2.93's I like my 2.93's anyway, there is a lot of torque on Buick.

    2. I don't think so.

Your ring gear has 41 teeth so if you can count the teeth on the pinion you
can certainly figure it out---12 teeth would give you 3:42,13/3.23 etc---
when I counted mine it had 16=2.56 :af: now it has new posi and new gears with
    12  (3:42) Pete
