I lost my original keys to my skylark the other night..
am I going to have to replace the ignition and trunk lock or could I get a locksmith to somehow make a key for me?
its so annoying, espeiclaly to lose the original GM keys.. I love those tiny little keys. How can such a huge car have such a tiny little key.

By the way should you be able to remove the ignition key whilst driving without turning off the engine?
It seems a little dangeorus but provides endless amusement for me when I scare the wits out of passengers as I pull the key out driving down the freeway at 70....

On that question when a key and cylinder get worn that will happen. I forgot to ask you, do you have the the orginal paper work to you car? Some times the key codes are written in the owners manual or service book with the car. Good Luck, AL.

Probably not but I can do that too, sometimes I really scare myself because I go to turn it off and realize the key's arent in the ignition. I have to make sure I put them in my pocket without realizing it lest I be stranded somewhere without my keys.

I can take the keys out of my regal all the time. When I park it, I don't turn the ignition all the way to "lock" but it looks like it is so the casual theif ignores the car.

so i can buy blank keys on the web.. though most of them seem to be upto 1966 rather than 1967.. how do I get them cut. Is there a way of finding out the correct code. I dont have any documents for the car, other than the registration document the dealer gave me when I bought it. Is there some code etched somewhere on the body.. or in the ignition system?

A pro locksmith could probably cut them right for you but it might cost a lil bit.

There is a code on the cylinder but you would need to to put the key switch to the "acc" position and that would require a correct key. Does you ignition key open your doors? If so a key can be made from that and may have a code stamped in it, AL.

    Lock cylinders.....

Assuming you still have access to the inside of the car... You should be able to pull the lock cylinder out of the door (same as ignition on old cars). The lock cylinders come apart and inside are numbered brass inserts. If your local GM dealer has a good parts man he should be able to punch out keys for you based on the numbers on those brass insterts (assuming you or they have good blanks).

    good luck

it being a convertible I never lock the doors so that seems like the best bet, taking out the cylinder. The ignition key and door keys are the same, the trunk key is different. So do you reckon I could just phone up the local Buick dealership and get them to cut new keys for me? Sorry to labour the point.. still useful info for any newbs like me who find themselves in similar situation :)

The keys to my car got "lost" by my wife during the divorce. I took the door lock to a lock smith and he was able to cut a new key using either the numbers or the tumblers. The glove box lock is the same as the trunk on my car so I got that key made also.

Wasn't that expensive but you have to call around and find an older locksmith who can do more than just copy keys.

    Good Luck.
Murphys law dictates that you'll find your lost keys within 2 weeks of getting the replacements.
