It’s running. I end up going to the old. The plug wires wouldn’t fit on the new one. After I got it warmed up i got it set to 10 btdc but it still runns a little rough and will sputter after i shut it
Running after you shut it off is usually called dieseling. Make sure you are using good fuel(highest octane you can get, and not old). It's good to have a temperature gauge, to be sure the engine is running at the correct temp. If you find and follow Larry's power timing thread that will make the car run a lot better too. Initial timing is only a small part of a larger story.
Its got new gas but running alot hotter than usual. Normally it’ll run around 190 but now it’s at 2:22 and climbing trying to figure out how to upload a video
With a timing light.....it seems to have the symptoms of running like the timing is too retarded...running hot, sputtering
Run on or dieseling can occur when engine is restarted and runs hotter combustion chamber, as "glow points" occur that can provide continuous ignition source with key off, and the carb can continue to supply small amount of fuel. All of us boomers, experienced this. You need to get exact TDC for #1, verify #1 is firing, and points at breaking at 2-4 degrees before top dead center, and wire/firing order is correct. That is the first step. Almost all 300 V8 2bbl ate 2.5 degrees btdc. Either the engine was off when you got the car, or something changed since you started working on it. Get to basics, and understand what you are doing, even if you have to ask 100 times. If you want a (no cost, I can't afford the taxes on $1.00) phone consultation, let me know, I'll be happy to work with you and help as much as I can. I don't want you to get frustrated.
So I’ve been tinkering with it and have got it to run pretty smooth and got the temperature to come down. But I wanted to show you where the mark was at . This is after it has been warmed up to around 190 vacuum advance hose is off and plugged up. I can’t get any lower near the gauge without it choking up while revving. The throttle response has gotten much better but It smells feels like it’s running rich. Is it possible that it’s getting way too much gas? The guy from O’Reillys ordered it and i think it’s 5.75 psi. I have never considered the fuel pressure until recently now that It’s been on the road a few times. I’ve never gotten a chance to drive it until recently. On a sidenote this thing drives like a boat.
That’s discouraging if you don’t know lol Could it be possible the timing chain is bad? Or could be put on wrong in someway? The guy I bought the car from said he replace the timing chain. and he is quite possibly the stupidest guy I know. Nice guy though but lacks common sense
We would need to verify exact top dead center on #1 and see how that correlates to the existing mark. If you were closer, I'd tell you to come over with a 12 pack
It can be several things. Harmonic balancer is two piece with rubber isolator, the outer ring can slip and the timing mark would be clocked incorrectly. Doing what CJay has been saying about mechanically setting #1 to TDC on compression stroke (both valves closed), then seeing where the rotor is pointed, and that the wires on the cap are correctly installed in firing order, and where the timing mark is showing relative to the timing indicator on the timing cover.
