hi guys . been doin some 'rythmatic n cypherin' and wonderin' if the piston rings for hyper pistons need to be dif than cast/forged versions ? some info i've seen kinda says no but some info kinda sounds the other way . and some info says 3.80 rings for v6 all same and same as cast/forged 350 but 3.80 rings for v8 show a dif# for cast/forged and hyper ? del

debating what to do next. have the ohc project in mind, thought about dual quads or a trip set up, a hilborn, a bigger s/c. find some v6 heads to make v8 heads, i dont know. keep thinking about darton sleeves so i can bump the cubes to 400. thats $$$. wish i had my own bore mill.

    got any ideas ?

The ring set part number difference between V6 and V8 may be only because the V8 gets two more sets of rings.

In my opinion, if a file-to-fit set is available, I'd do that and would probably go on the high side of the gap spec. If high compression, forced induction or anything else is planned that will raise cylinder pressure, it would be good insurance. If the gap closes and binds, the hypereutectic piston won't tolerate it and the piston's ring land(s) will fracture.

HYPEREUTECTEC PISTONS ARE NOT ALL THE SAME.

The "KB-Silvolite" hypers are known for the large top ring gap. A normal ring set becomes a file-to-fit set when used with those pistons--you WILL have to open up the top ring gap, don't spend extra money and make more work for yourself by buying file-fit rings.

Other brands of hyper pistons may not need the huge top gap.

KNOW what you are buying, and KNOW what the piston manufacturer recommends for ring gaps.

thanks for info . just tryin to picture it in my head . was thinkin the "gap" was more a function of cylinder wall size , was more worried about ring thickness and depth as it pertained to the design of the hypers and the lower rate of expansion . del

so i finally had a chance sit down with 2 pistons ( std cast low comp +.020 and a hyper #H644P20 federal mogul +.020 low comp ) and a set of regular rings #E288X . eyeball'd 'em - looked pretty much the same . although the ring "slot" spacing is dif , the ring slot opening thickness measured the same , so i'm thinkin fine , no problem . but , the slot depth was dif - approx .200 on the cast and approx .180 for the hypers . ? . took one of the top rings and placed it in the cast piston top slot - sits down in from edge of piston approx .020 - enough i felt to allow the ring tension to work against the cyl wall as designed probably . i placed the same ring into the top slot of the hyper and sure enough it is either flush or maybe even a little over the edge of the piston . i feel that may jamb the rings against the cyl wall instead of letting the tension work . am i concerned over something minor - or - does common sense make sense ? when i get a chance i'll check with federal mogul and see if thats correct . thanks for any input . del
    ## EDIT ## (1) contacted fed mogul and posed same question to them
    (2) checked summit - sbc hyper and cast speed pro pistons list same part # rings

If it makes any difference.. I'm running the h644p30 with off the shelf moly rings from TA with 8-12 lbs of boost (depending on which gauge you believe). I just installed them per instructions.. No oil usage or noticeable blow by.. I've made 100s of full throttle runs... Spraying washer fluid..

and i ran the h522p-30's to 7500rpm(and the crash at 10000 rpm) and they held together. this engine has seen upwards to 300 degrees at times. no warped heads, no broken pistons. only issue i had.....was some dummy :Dou: change the s/p intake from a sq bore to a qjet and must have dropped something down the intake. bent 2 valves, peppered the top of 2 pistons, but did not break them. saving them for another engine build. this engine is a r&d ongoing project. its supposed to get abused.

    just my .02

will be at the valley sunday
