    Hello again Buick lovers:Brow:

Some of you may know about me, and my quest, and i am sure some of you are tired of hearing about it...so i will begin to babble.

I would like to hear about you guys running hydraulic,"non flat tappet" cammed motors, i have (raced hard) and tuned the crap out of my Iron head STG-1 455 for over 3 years now, yes this is the beginning of year #4, and still making great oil pressure, and not showing it's age...I would like to hear what others have accomplished???

As of today i have reached a new record, which surpasses anything i thought this car could accomplish.

Milan Dragway, 72 degrees, headwind of 8 mph average, baramoter at 29.42 and steady, 53% humidity, altitude of 463 ft above sea level.

Adjustments to air bleeds, with my stg-2 scoop, new this year netted me my first pass under 10.83..as a matter of fact all 3 passes were under 10.83.....and my best short time ever, and i am one happy camper.

    Best pass was as follows:

    60'----141.4
    330'----4.313
    1/8----6.784 @ 98.92mph
1/4----10.789 @ 119.77mph (maby another jet for more mph)

car wt-3350lb, with 9" slicks, leaving on trans brake 3200rpms.

Let me hear about your numbers, i would like to know who else has this low buck, low maintainence, torque monster, in a similar weight-car.

    :beer

 <----this is my perma-grin......it may not go away for a while.

Plus the car is soooooo consistent..perfect bracket set up!!!

Done babbling....looking foward to your replies!!

That's definately a cool car....I remember noticing it at Norwalk in '03,Don't you run through mufflers too?

I know you're familiar w/ Tom Rix.......I think Bruce Wilson has run well w/ a hydraulic too, but,Those are both w/ aluminum heads.

Good job,Now go out and get some of that bracket money.

Yea Gary, another 68lbs of dead weight, but it sure is nice to hear the car instead of exaust all the time.....Been going rounds, just not in the big money yet.
Rest assured that when i get in the Finals you all will hear bout it!!!

I run one of the only Buick v-8 powered cars in the programs here, and get alot of non-believers. I educate them in in less than 11. sec...YA HOOO

if i could only hang the hides like you do!!!

Way to go Dave! Don't paint it! It will change the combination. My 68 is pretty basic too. My combination: 11.00-1 pistons, Kenne-Bell Maxi 3 hydraulic cam, Cool Runner Intake, street port iron heads, (250intake, 187 exhaust) stock 850 Holley & 4.11 gears & weigh in around 3200+lbs. I run a 10.50 tire. My engine is on the 5th season here without lifting a single tool. I leave with the brake at 3800rpm's. My best this year 10.63 @124mph & best 60' was 1.39. You gotta love these mild combinations! Randy

    Dave,

I run a old hyd. cam too. KB-107(window rattler) 2nd version of it. Foot braked 64' lark', 35/3600#'s with me in it, iron stg.1 heads, 4.10's in a 8.5'' rear, 10.5'' tires. I went 11.51 end of last year with it but the air was 4000' :eek2: and it was 98* out. I am gonna head to Topeka this weekend to run so hopefully that number will fall some. REALLY looking forward to falling outa the bad air and getting to a low track. Heartland is around 1000' feet I think, so if the air holds I may have a shot a a good run.

Good thread here I'll have to watch this one.

    later.....................

    Hey Dave,

Great accomplishment, I can feel your excitement. Nothing like running faster then you ever have before, not too mention the fact you dont have to do anything to it other then change the oil and play with jetting.:TU: :TU: :TU: :beer
I for one, am never tired of hearing about success stories at the track. Awesome job for sure. I remember the first time you got in the 10s, that in itself was a mile stone, now you are in the 10.70s with iron heads and a hydraulic cam, yikes! She is just getting broken in, How low can she go? :Do No:

you are like a kid in a candy store. I was wondering when you were selling that car to get horse's:af: Just kidding I think you should post the cam specs. If I recall they are pretty small just shows you don't need a giant stick to go quick. Hey I'm a poet   glad you are having a good time I know I am you coming to stanton sat.

Dave, Mine cost less than yours, I'll run you heads up. Your car does impress me with its simplicity and it runs pretty well also. Other than mine being a backhalf car and weighing a little less they are very similar, mine just happens to be built out of all used parts to make it cheap. Never paint that car, it would never be the same.

But Dave, didn't you just paint that car this spring?

True, it was with $17 worth of rattle can primer, but you DID paint it!

Before I went to the TA Stage 2s my combo was this:

    SP4 cam
    ancient Jahn's 11-1 pistons (true comp 10.6-1)
    ported Stage 1s, TA rollers
    ported B4B w/950 TQ
    3800 ATI 10in
    4.10 gear
    3700 lbs

ran between 10.40s and 10.80s, depending on weather and track

went about 400 runs and lots of street miles then a block web broke

    68 times!

Just reading this post with interest. In 1995 I built an old 68 Skylark with an iron head-non-ported 9 to 1 455 with stock pistons and only a K-B Maxi-3 cam and K-B intake and Polston headers. This car went a best of 11.48 @ 118mph. I raced it for 5 years both bracket and the last 2 years Nationally in NSCA NMC, finishing # 2 in 99 and 2000. In 2000 mid year I replaced the engine with a higher compression, iron head Stage 1 with a Maxi 4 cam and went a best of 10.68 @ 127 mph. During the winter I removed that engine and reinstalled the 9 to 1 motor and sold the car to a local bracket racer who is still racing it and running 7.0's in the 1/8 mile. I built a 67 GS for Nostalgia Super Stock and installed the high compression engine in the 67 and have raced it ever since. This engine is on it's 4th year of racing and this spring it went 10.31 @ 128.22 in NO Problem LA. Both of these engines used the K-B hydraulic cams and they have been trouble free and easy on valve train. This engine was built by Charlie Evans and he is currently working on a Stage II for me now. Hope to be in the 9's soon.

Hello, mine is a full weight 72 with just under 10to1 comp and on pump gas with the old Poston 105A hyd. cam [I need to find card for specs, don't remember off the top of my head]. The cam sounds much bigger than it really is and is not a very good "street cam" but I drive on the street alot but I have a 10" converter with about 3800 stall, at least that is what B&M says it should be behind a decent big block, ported TA intake with a 1050 Holley and home ported 70 iron heads. I also have manual brakes. It idles about 1100 rpm in park and sounds real nasty and have made many street driven big block chevelles look bad during heads up time runs at the races I even beat a 69 chevelle with a 502 and roller cam that is driven on the street heads up. I had a huge grin after that race  I don't mean to say I have not been beat by other street cars but they are major buck cars or most of the time its another Buick or a 440 mopar in a small body. I got cleaned by a street driven Ford lightning with a huge after market blower on it instead of stock one I think he runs very high 10s-11:0s with slicks. Tom W

NOW THIS IS WHAT IM TALKIN ABOUT!! KEEP EM COMING....I LOVE THE BUILD UPS.....AND HOW THEY LAST...HOW THEY PERFORM....AND IT PROVES THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE CAN MAKE AN A-BODY BUICK RUN LIKE S&^T THROUGH A GOOSE, FOR THE COST OF GOOSE FOOD!!!!

I am not tryin to sabatoge the whole stage 1 aluminim setup, or anyother set up for that matter......i know there are people out there saying "building a bracket car is too much money" BUT all the posts will help people see the the enjoyment we get out of our set ups!!!:Comp:
Just think how BIG bracket 1 would be at BG....with alot of 10-11 sec race cars!!! YEEEEEE HAWWWWWWW!!!

Going fastest is great, affording to keep racing......priceless!!!

Dave, though I'm not as fast as you, my engine has been going for 5 years, thanks to Bobb and Steve Morris Engines in Muskegon. It was probably one of the first Buick engines that Bobb had a hand in for a 'customer'. The boys at the time wanted me to use a different hyd cam then the old KB MK4, but is was handy and about free! Gary Paine had run one back in the day and ran 10.60s I think he had said. But I wasn't interested in going faster, yet. Best it ever ran was at St Thomas, when Wally pulled a 11.26 and then 11.31 in '00, then I went out and ran a 11.31 too! In 2001 I ran 11.306 at Norwalk out of the box. And at Cecil last year in the late time trials on Friday ran 11.36, so I was happy. The car needs to lose some more weight just like the driver has lost some. Still have the inner fenders and door crash bars, and bench seat, so there's some thing for me to think about! Next real thing to think about is some more suspension work, I need to lose the 34 yr old front 350 ci a/c springs and put some new ones in as well as lower control arm bushings, and get some shocks that we understand how to adjust, the Koni's are hard to adjust, put the beast on the scales and get it right. As well as a paint job, which I think I might have just figure out yesterday. PPG Mary Kay Pearl, like the MK Cadillac I saw at Detroit-Hamtramck, 2004 with a purple GSX ghost stripe! Won't be this year, but maybe over the winter. The pearl white color will take the temp of the entire car down at least 20 degrees, and B2 will be mine next year! And then who knows, time to freshen up the engine, but other than the windage tray dislodging a year ago, has been a low maintenance, check the oil and the timing once in a while go fast fun racecar! Remember racecar is racecar spelled backwards! The car runs in the 11.40s at BG or has for the last couple of years, with the 10.5s it would have been even faster at BG, but I wore out the 10.5 and ran the 29x9s, maybe some new wider tires are in the plan for Salem as well as some can I say this, mufflers??? Then I can drive to the cruise up the road in Salem and up the road on Sunday nights at Home, and really harrass the troups! RV
