Hybrid car mileage not near as good as advertised

    I'm slightly confused by the Escape comment. The article linked to was on hybrid Prius and Civics not getting advertised mileage. My comment on the diesel VW Rabbit had to do with that. If a diesel Rabbit in 1984 could get 45 mpg, a hybrid Civic in 2004 should be getting better than 33. The diesel vs. gas makes a difference and the Civic is probably a heavier car-that Rabbit was tiny!-but the Civic has 20 years of technology and it's a hybrid car. If I was buying a Civic I wouldn't spend $6000 extra for apparently small fuel savings.

    I agree. If I could get 20+ mpg driving my +4000Lb 71 4-door to Bowling Green, you'd think people could get at least 20mpg in a brand new 4000lb SUV.

    I don't know anything about that aspect of the car. It does drive fairly well though. No stoplight to stoplight stormer, but at 49 mpg, I like it a lot better than my Suburban!
