The title says it all guys, how do you tell the difference between the two and how do you decipher what horse power model you may have, because I just purchased a 1965 Buick Wildcat and I don't know where to begin and I'd like to truly know what it is I have, thanks in advance Slick.

Get hold of an old Chilton's manual or the proper Buick service manual, and read the section about engine serial numbers and codes. I believe the codes for the 425 were LK in 1965, but I could be mistaken. I know the first letter for a 1965 engine was "L". Anyway, the books will have the proper codes listed, and that's about the only positive way to properly determine the block size.

My nail is a 65 425 with the LW stamped on the front the the valley cover. Check the #`s on yours and post them, and what is on the air cleaner 445 is 401 and 465 is 425

The one link that shows you where to find the numbers was never posted; here it is.

    http://www.teambuick.com/forums/view.php?pg=indent_engine_where

Once you find the two letter code on the valley cover surface, you can then use the other links to find your engine. If your car has the original engine, the year letter will be an "L." If it's a 401 the other letter will be a "T," if it's a 425, the other letter will be a "W." If it's anything other than one of those two (I'm assuming it's a four barrel engine) then you'll need to decode it using one of the other links previously posted.

While we're on the subject of 401/425's - is there a trick to removing the intake manifold from a 401/425 - I've already removed the 8 bolts (4 on each side) that hold the manifold to the head(s). Maybe I need to push harder? I'm using a long breaker bar with a rag on the end, shoving it under the manifold and, while ensuring the bar isn't resting on the valley pan, then gently prying upward. Right now, it's appears to be an immovable object. TIA.

Nope. I'll bet the previous owner used some nasty gasket sealer to make it stick real good.... dunno what will loosen it other than some good 'gentle' force.

  12. they probably didn't want it to leak any coolant..lol

Hey Guys, thanks for all the responses, and guess what, it just so happens that the former owner of the WildCat I just obtained is or was a member of the sites Teambuick.com & Buicks.net, and he has decoded the entire car from the Cowl/firewall data plate, the engine block numbers LT 5y108656 (which is a 1965 401 cube motor) and even the cylinder head I.D. 1196914! The body color is Turquois Mist Poly and the interior is Teal with Buick Mags on all four corners w/power steering, power brakes, and power seats that are not working at the moment, lol, but I'm gonna clean it up and get some picks up for you guys soon!:TU:

Keep in mind that the only options that show up on the data plate are the ones for which Fisher Body had to make changes to a base body. A hole or two here and there, a clip for a wire here, a hole for the remote mirror, or some clips for the remote trunk release. Fisher body also installed the windows before the car went to final assembly. Things like cornering lights, four note horns, tilt wheel, radio selection, could all be determined/changed at that point in the final assembly. Chances are that there are usually more options on the car than appear on the data plate.

For example, the window sticker for my '63 Riviera shows electro-cruise, corner lights, tilt wheel, four note horn, oversized wsw tires with wider wheels, cast aluminum wheel covers, guide matic, and twilight sentinel as factory delivered options. None of which are listed on the data plate.

Not exactly correct, MZ was used for '66 425 2x4v and MX was for '66 340 2v low compression export engine.

I have a working power bench seat for a 65 Wildcat. PM me if you are interested in the parts, we can work out a deal.
