How to retrofit Legendary repro door/rear panels?

Ordered a set of '72 Skylark repro door and rear panels for the ol' rag but didn't realize they were only the flat panel portions - the top of the panels end at the point where the upper sill plate portion would be attached if it were a separate piece (which it isn't)... The rep never mentioned a need to cut and paste from the old panels and the new ones are essentially useless in their current form.

Has anyone run across this? Now that I look at their catalog all the 'lark panels are made this way... I've already resealed the boxes and I'm calling on Monday for a return # barring some miraculously easy solution :af:

    Scott,
I think all the repro buick panels require re-using the curved pieces at the top. That's how I used to sell my buick door panels when I was making them years ago.
Maybe you should call Legendary and see if they offer a service to finish your panels.

sounds like an expensive proposition if it can be done... But, I have to call them anyway for the r.a. - guess asking couldn't hurt...

    Scott,
It may just be expensive, but that's part of the process everyone needs to do to have new doorpanels for their cars.
Some chevy doorpanels are sold complete, but you pay the extra anyway.

Any local upholstery place worth their salt should be able to swap out and install the metal portion for you. As Duane said, its the only way they come.

Very easy to remove your old metal uppers and install them to the new door panels. We have article on our site for this. Local upholstery can do the work for you.

Local shop here in town is charging me $45 per panel to install.

I'm still undecided - except for a small area of tear damage to the lower left door panel, all else is clean and I hate to tear up an otherwise good set of panels - if I were to install door speakers the damaged area on that left panel would be cut out anyway...

Legendary will take them back for a full refund - I'm thinking that's the way to go right now and I can decide later if I want to go the repro route if I come across a set of cheap cores worth cutting up. Besides, the refund will free up needed $$ for the front end rebuild!

But many thanks for the feedback! :beer

    Now I am completely baffled!
I've been wanting to get a set of door panels for my 72 Skylark and I thought that I had carefully done my homework and I was led to believe that a fully assembled door panel came complete with everything including all trim pieces + the window felt sweep and now you say that all repro panels require re-using the top piece.

As far as I know that is the only way they are available, but I have not purchased an interior kit for many years, so I may not be up on current events.

They are basically the backer board w/vinyl covering.
You will need to transfer your upper metal support, cut holes for door lock knob/remote mirror, transfer metal trim if so equipped, install GS/Skylark/Custom emblems, window sweeps, etc.
