Well, I can get it on. But, it won't stay on! ( I'm always warping the retainer clip)

That's why I ended up here (used the board's search option).... trying to find some tips on how to get that spring back in (vent window handle, 68 Cat).

Crank handle sits flush with door panel and I really need to push to have the handle (along with a little play of the panel) where it belongs. At that point there 's no way to have something (like a rag) between the crank base and the door panel.
Very frustrating after a couple of hours (and also losing a spring..)

    Suggestions are much appreciated.....

Put the clip in the slot in the handle and then shove the handle onto the gear. The spring will flex open and then snap shut once it reaches the groove in the gear. That's why the end of the gear is tapered.

Use a tool like the K-D 431. It will push the spring up out of the crank groove, and won't push it off the handle. So you don't have to scream at nobody.

I tried it a gain, and now it's been on there a few weeks. I'm not sure what I did different to get it to stay on this time.
(maybe I should've got some one to take my picture as I put it on........ to see how I was holding my mouth!)
