I have the instrument cluster out of my 72 GS. My speedo makes a little squeaking noise while driving, what is the best type of lube to use. I assume I could squirt some WD-40 in the rear of the speedo hole and maybe some down the cable while their apart, or should I use powdered graphite, etc? Thanks
Jeff, the best way to correct the squeak problem is to remove the centre steel speedo cable from the plastic casing. Lube the cable up good with white lithium (spelling?) grease.
Another burnished Cinnamon 71 chimming in. Vaseline works as well and everyone usually has a jar. I have often just had to disconnect from back of speedo and put a small dab where it plugs into speedo.
Do what they said - WD-40 isn't that great for lubrication. Make sure the problem is the cable, too. I had noise from my Speedo, and eventually the odometer stopped working (of course, I knew it had to do with the gearing getting wet when fighting a dash fire, so it's not likely your problem.).
