Iam starting to build a new motor, and will have to get new push rods. I was going to use an adjustable pushrod to measure, but what do you do with the lifter to get the proper preload when measuring the lenghts. Since the will be no oil preasure on the lifter?

    Thanks

What I was told to do.

I just had this conversation with a well respected Buick engine builder and this is what he said:

    1) Cut one of your old pushrods in half.

    2) Tap one end and insert a threaded stud, hence making the length adjustable.

    3) Use this new adjustable push rod to measure the remaining rocker to lifter clearances, making sure the lifter is on the base circle of the cam.

    4) Determine the shortest distance among your measurments.

    5) add 25 thousands to the shortest measurement and that is length of push rod you need.

This method was for non-adjustable, custom pushrods.

Perform a Search on the BB and you should find your answer re: adjustables. I think it was answered just the other day.

    HTH:)

Is this with stock rockers or roller? If roller, should this be done with the adjuster dead center of its travel?:Do No:

    Stock

This procedure was in reference to stock rockers.

We never discussed a roller rockers given my budget. Sorry:(

    Sorry
I forget to include this important piece of information. This is on a motor with 1.6 TA roller rockers.

    Thanks

I would think that the same would apply for roller rockers as long as the rockers are set to the mid point of the tolerances when making the push rod measurement. TA roller rocker instruction sheet.....http://www.taperformance.com/roller.htm

    push rod length

When you set for push rod length you need to make sure at mid lift that your roller tip or rocker tip is 90 deg. to valve tip. To check this put some black marker on the tip of the valve and rotate the engine over by hand, remove the rocker and look at the tip of the valve for a mark, it should be in the middle of your valve tip. If it is to the intake side your push rod is to short if it is to the exhaust side it is to long. You need to use a solid lifter to perform this check when you get the proper length add about .060 thous. to it and that will put the hyd. lifter in its range.
