This is in a 1970 GS stage1 and I can't find the code that is stamped on the rear axle tube. Is there another way to identify the rear axle housing? I'm trying to order seals and bearing for it.
    Thanks, Kraig

Look at the cover, if it has cutouts at 9 and 3 o'clock, then you have a BOP rear. If the yoke uses U-bolts, you have an 8.2. If you have screws and straps, you have an 8.5" If I were you, I would remove the original area and store it. Get an 8.5" from 71-2 Cutlass/Skylark, and you will be set. The 8.5" rears are cheaper to build, easier to find, more parts selection and GM used the same center section from 71-87. You can get a posi unit from most 80-87 GM full size wagons. I have an article on our site for the posi search. When swapping to the 8.5" you will need to shorten your d-shaft 1".

You will have problems finding bearings for the 8.2" and they will probably cost more than a rebuild "kit" for the 8.5

Thanks for responding. So the only rearends to get are from a 71-72 skylark/cutlass? What did pontiac use? When pulling the rear end can you use the same drive shaft that came out of the car instead of cutting my origanal?

Only Cutlass and Skylark had the corporate 8.5"
Pontiac, Chevelle used the 8.2" rears which used U-bolts.
You can use the d-shaft from the donor 8.5" car. I would have the d-shaft checked before you install it to make sure it is balanced. Also, you don't want to use the two piece shaft (shell in tube/telescopic) which is found on some 71-2 A-body models. You want a 1 piece tube design.
