I just bought a '70 GS350 and the car supposedly has the "oo" 3.42 rear end which was specially ordered from the factory. Is there a way I can verify this? Thanks!

First, nail the gas to determine if it has posi :Brow:

The 'OO' stamping (10 bolt - 8.2 inch rear) should be on the passenger side axle tube, ususlly about a foot from the center.

Sometimes they are stamped in a different location, sometimes they are not stamped at all.

    Good luck!

Is there any way I can find out if it came with the "OO" rear end from the factory as opposed to it being added on by the original owner? Also, is it rare for a GS350 to have the "OO" rear end?

    Hi Mike -

Check one of those 'documentation sources' I responded with in your other thread. It will have a 'G1' sales code in the information if you have a posi rear from the factory.

I don't have the production figures in front of me - maybe someone else can chime in regarding the 'rarity', but you must first establish it as a factory option.

Thanks Marco, I'll see what I come up with from Sloan.

    buickbonehead WOT Baby!

I was going to say they matched rears with trannies because my '65 has a BS code tranny and the listing shows the '65 BS came with a 3.42 rear. But the listing only has the rears listed for '65. I thought it might be a good way to verify it a different way. :Do No: Maybe there is a listing somewhere else that has it for the other years.

Which brings up a question (maybe stupid). With the different ratio rear ends produced, which is it that makes the speedo read the correct MPH, is it a different gear in the speedometer or is it a difference in the tranny.

In other words I have the drive train out of a '65 Riviera GS that I am putting into my Wildcat. I'm replacing a 3.07 rear and BJ tranny with a 3.42 rear and a BS tranny. Will my speedo read correctly, excluding any discussion of tire size etc?
