How to Determin 8.2 Series Carrier

I have a 70 GS with 8.2 Peg Leg and 3:23 Gears. My carrier went bad and Doug Paine on this board was nice enough to hook me up with another carrier from a Skylark which he thought had a 2:60 something gear. So what he gave me should be a series 2 and I need a series 3. If I just get the ring gear spacer kit from Summit I should be set. Well I just took my rear apart and in a brief comparision my carrier looks simular to the used carrier. I don't have the Summit kit yet so I don't know how thick it is .20" Maybe.

How do I verify if they are actually different or the same so I know if I need the spacer kit for my ring gear or not? Are there numbers located somewhere on the carrier that will tell me what each unit is? Is there some measurement from one point to another that would lead me in the right direction?

    Someone Please Help!!!!

There are 4 different ratio '68-70 BUICK 8.2 10 bolt carriers.
Have ran up against similiar problems in the past, & tried a few months back to get anybody with loose BUICK 8.2 carriers to post the "stagger" dimensions.

Doubt the high (2.56) ratio carrier with a modified Chevy 8.2 spacer will move the ring gear far enough to the right to use 3.23's or 3.42's. Hard to say as I'd bet the Chevy spacer is slightly thicker than the difference in a high ratio carrier & a mid-high ratio carrier. Such a spacer equipped high ratio Buick 8.2 carrier should allow use of 273's & 2.93's. Hate to say it, but as long as folks try & stick with the '68-70 BUICK 8.2 rear we're going to see this problem arise. Will go back find my original request post & post back.

Searched a little @ found the post from Feb. This was addressing differences in the '64-69 "Pontiac" 8.2 carriers & the '68-70 BUICK 8.2 carriers & adapting the Pontiac 8.2 carriers into Buick hsgs. Dimensions of the carrier staggers are asked for at the end.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 4 different series of the '68-70 Buick 8.2 carriers. Conversely, there are three different ratio '64+ 8.2 BOP ''Pontiac'' carriers. One must pick the correct ratio or stagger carrier, if trying to adapt the ''Pontiac'' 8.2 carrier into the '68-70 Buick 8.2 housing (edit:) or vice versa.

Having in the past, had a thin bushing machined to press on such a lh carrier bearing boss, this works better when one is trying to get to one of the two lower ratio Buick 8.2 carriers, the highest ratio, 2.56-2.78, ''Pontiac'' is not avail aftermarket.

Before the board crashed a year or so ago, I had a request out for anyone who had loose '68-70 8.2 Buick carriers, with original ring gears attached, to post the distance from the edge of the lh bearing boss to the edge of the machined ring gear mtg surface. This is best done by setting the carrier on the lh bearing boss on top of a flat surface, then measuring up to the machined flange. Would love to see this info avail, will be adding to this post with measurements...

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

    Matt,
Do yourself a favor and get a 71-2 Skylark/Cutlass 8.5" rear. You are going to spend too much time, aggravation, money on the 8.2"

With the corporate 8.5" you have more parts to choose from, lower prices and better strength.

I would love to go 8.5 but for now I'm just trying to get this thing drivable. Looking at the Carrier still mounted on the car with the rear cover off, if I measure from the right side of the ring gear mounting surface to the end of the bearing on the right end of the carrier and this distance is the same on both units does this mean that they are both the same series carrier?

    Thanks
    Matt

    Matt,
Totally understand, you're not the 1st I've run into that just needed the correct ratio BUICK 8.2 pegleg carrier to get a car backl on the the road.

The carrier has to be measured, like above, out of the housing. The "stagger" of the carrier will be evident that way.

Am away from home base right now, & should have some more measurements of other Pontiac & Buick 8.2 carriers by the end of the week.

Roger, thanks. I've got everything torn apart so it should be easy for me to make any measurements.
