How to define 'numbers matching'?

When I purchased my 68 GS400 convertible, I did not verify 'numbers matching'.
What all do I need to verify to determine that mine is a 'numbers matching' car?
I cannot find any build sheets. The following is what I think I need to match?
Then, how do I know that the numbers on the engine, tranny, and rear axle came with that car and not a 68 Skylark? I am planning to do a body-off restoration at the end of this year.
    - dashboard VIN (found)
    - cowl tag (found)
    - engine block numbers (cannot find)
    - transmittion stamp (found)
    - rear axle tag or stamp (cannot find)
Do I need all these for a 'numbers matching'?
What else do I need for a 'numbers matching'?
    Thank-you in advance!

    Hi (what's your name?)

Here is some discussion of what the term 'Matching Numbers' means, based on opinions of the members here.

    Numbers Matching

    Marco,
Thanks for the info. I found this thread last night and started to read. I finished tonight. Great thread...

I have a 68 GS400 convertible automatic that I beleive to be 'original, numbers matching' except for the rear quarters and rechromed bumpers... even down to the engine, intake, heads, exhaust manifolds, carb, distributor, top, top boot, etc. But the car needs some tender loving car. I bought the car 6 years ago as a birthday present for my wife. She wanted a 'daily driver'. So I put customized MN plates "68 GS" and let her drive whenever, where ever. Now, I would like to restore to almost original... as much as possible anyway.

I have not verified all the data and cannot find where I have all the numbers written down... so, back to square one.

The reason I was asking, the frame is soft and must be replaced. This, according to the 5 or 6 points, will not keep its 'numbers matching' status. That's a shame, because the frame must go!

When I do the frame off, I will also be pulling the motor apart to verify all numbers.

Worst case scenario... Numbers Matching (except frame).

I will be looking for some help deciferring codes in the future.
I would like to solicit your help... if that is OK with you!

    Thanks again!

    Hi Gil -

There's many, many helpful people here - you've come to the right place to get your questions answered!

Replace the frame and make your car safe and whole again! Nothing wrong with replacing stuff, just be honest if you need to sell it in the future.
