I picked up a carb from a 70 Riv, and I'm planning on putting it on my centurion so I can have the original one rebuilt, while this one substitutes for a few days. I'm not sure how to clean it before I put it on, there are so many little compartments and other areas that has some grit/dust in/on em, any ideas?

    Thanks

Are you going to take it apart?

I'd throw it on the car without cleaning it to see if it will run. Sometimes you're better off leaving the dirt on the carb, as it has acted as a "seal" of sorts for years. If you knock all that junk off the sides, you may end up with a fuel leak:grin:

Oh, my...hope the "Underhood Gods" don't notice that...they won't be happy....Adam's a bigger man than I am, I couldn't bring myself to put a funky carb on my car without completely going through it first....

When you say you're having your original carb rebuilt, do you mean sending it off to one of the guru's to be rebuilt/rebushed/setup, or just have a shop put a rebuild kit in it? You know, a rebuild kit is easy to do yourself....

Otherwise, cleaning a carb is easy - just get a couple of cans of carb cleaner, and go to town on it. Might need a small brush if it's really funky. You can open it up, or leave it alone if it runs.

I'll get a picture of it, and we'll see what we'll do to it. I was planning on taking it to a carb shop here, which has a good rep. It's like 75$ for them to rebuild it, and then everything should be ok. But if it can be done yourself, I'd prefer that. I bought a book on the q-jet, but it just looks tricky..

    Kimson,
I bought a Rochester book myself. Recently picked up a rebuildable Q-jet core to learn with myself. Not as tricky as you think. I'm about ready to finish reassembly, still looking for a vac. pull off bracket. The rebuild/kit was easy. I think the real issue will be set-up when I try it on the car in May.

If their rebuilding includes installing bronze bushings on the throttle shafts, I'd let them do it for $75.
