How do I adjust the speed on my '71 in-dash AM/8-Track?

It plays just fine, except that Red Sovine sounds like one of the Chipmunks...need to slooooooooooowwww it down a little.

    Ideas?

It has been a long time since I looked at one (and I have one) of Bill Lear's inventions. But generallly a piece like that will have a pot with an adjustment screw behind a bezel on a front knob so you can adjust it while in play.

Might need new belts, a common problem.
There is usually a guy selling them on e-bay.

The belt wear caused them to drag and play too slow --not speed up. At least that is what I remember.

    Makes sense.
I read too quickly, and just saw the "to slow".

Just knew about the belts and cleaning the rubber wheels.
    Didn't remember about the adjustment.
    Good to know!

Thanks for the quick replies! I'll pull the dash panels Friday and see what's there, I think I remember a tiny dashpot on one side.

    I'll let you all know.

    Thanks Again!:TU:

i believe that ther are solenoids in the player that can be adjusted to control the driveshaft velocity . i believe that tape has to pass the read head at 1" /second .
it may take an oscilliscope to do this properly . there are a few technicians left who can adjust/repair these units . had mine repaired by a fellow in kitchener ontario .

Haven't taken anything apart yet, but I remember on the large driven wheel there were little square "holes" near the outer edge, and each one had a letter by it, A through Z. Any idea what those are for, maybe a kind of "timing light" arrangement???

Wedge a matchbook under the tape bottom and tape door.

Worked back in the 70's for me. :)
