I know this is a hard question to ask, but I have a 70 GS in primer. Just about all of the steel is good, but it does need some sanding and bondo. I had one guy come out and give me an estimate of $10,000. I think if thats what a quality paintjob and body work costs these days, I will go to walmart and get some krylon and do it myself. I have a pic below of what the car looks like..... Also if anyone is from north jersey and knows of a good shop please let me know.... Thanks, ROb
Well guy, good paint does cost $30-$100 per pint. You can spend $3000 easy if you do it your self and buy top brand. I mentioned this in another thread. There is a guy who sells paint for $30 a gallon on Ebay. Its 'cheap" paint but its not cheap quality wise. Buddy painted his truck electric blue and it came out looking very nice. Only cost him $100-150 including chemicals. Sort of Macao range but much better job. He also only did one section at a time. Which can be easier then painting the whole car at once. http://cgi6.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=paintforcars Though in reality. Unless your a top notch painter. I would hire a friend if you go the top brand do it yourself route. Mistakes will be very pricy.
reply... Well I know I am from NJ where everything is more expensive, but I had expected to pay between 3 and 5 thousand. I was shocked by the 10k price. I just wanted to make sure that Im not dating myself with that budget. Does anyone know of anyone in the NJ area that does very good work at a good price? I was told that the reason it was soo much money was that the panels had minor dents and dings, and would have to be "wrapped in plastic" and then primed and painted, and that the excessive cost was all labor. I was also told that the primer I used "rustoleum professional auto primer" was crap, and would need to be sanded off down to the metal and re-done. I have a feeling that Im being taken for a fool on this one.... Thanks for all the input...
10K for a quality job is reasonable. Once you add in the price of good labor. A good painter can make 200hr.
A smart body man or painter wont warranty their work unless you let them take everything down to bare and start all over. A good paint job is dependent on its foundation. You could pay 5k and 3 months later the paint flakes off cause you wanted them to leave your primer on. They would be in the right not fix it. I wouldn't.
i doing the same process however i epoxy primed and top coated with polyester primer guidecoated and blocksanded, what peices do i need to disemble to get the best deal on labor prices, i have allready taken off the basics mirrors, bumpers door handles, should i take off the doors, hood, trunk lid???
Maybe you shuold just get a full vinyl wrap. Just saw it on horsepower TV. It was awesome. 5 year warranty. The vinyl is rated for 8 but they add a clear coat layer. Just super rich and nice. Full wraps start at $4500
For my 1968 Skylark I just was quoted $3,500.00 for rust repair with patch metal on quarters a little bondo elsewhere and full paint with him removing trim and bumpers, cheaper if I do it. He just did a repair on one rear quarter which neighbor backed into and it came out mint. How he blended the paint of a 30+ year old car is amazing. Repair on quarter entailed patch metal around wheel well to repair rust.
reply little FYI....I found a local shop that will paint my car for $4,000....I have seen several cars that they have done, and that price includes me pulling the bumpers and glass and them picking it up on a rollback. if anyone in north jersey needs good paint work I have the phone number. :3gears:
I got mine done in MA when I lived there (now in NJ). My paint guy took everything down to metal, welded new skins on, new batter tray, primed and painted the following: -door jams -underneath the hood -underneath the trunk lid -painted the body PPG w/ clear coats It took him 7 months, all winter long at a cost of about $6,500. He did a awesome job. See for yourself: <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v631/mbgoodwin737/Bythelake005.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com" height=300 width=400> The key for me to get all that work for a decent price was to let him take his time and do it as fill in work. I visited the shop every couple of weeks to see his progress, and give him checks. I ordered all parts like the skins and batter tray etc. I took all parts off the car, trim bumbers headlights, interior, everything so he would not have to. I refurbished all metal and had the bumbers done while it was in the shop. The key is to give them JUST the paint and let them take their time, and the price will come down, oh yeah............pay him cash.
Where in MA? Hey Mike, Can you tell me where you got this paint job? It sounds like just what I'm looking for. My convertible is off the road as soon as the salt flies and I'd be happy for someone to take their time with it. $6,500 for metal work and a good paint job sounds just like my budget! PM me if you'd prefer to not put the name out in plain site. :beer Thanks a million, John
Wottons's Auto Body Dan Wotton is the owner, a great guy. He is out of North Chelmsford, MA right off route 3. I do not have his number on hand right now, I can get it later if you need it. This was 4 or so years ago, he did a great job, but his prices may have changed. Let me know if you need more info.
FSA Restorations in Franklin, Mass. did my car about 4 years ago. They did a great job: jambs, under the hood and trunk, stripes. All done in DuPont ChromaBase BC/CC. Cost me $3500. I did all the disassembly and assembly. Took 6 weeks. Kevin Carlow is the owner, and these guys are old car guys all the way.
