Can someone give me some general guidelines as to how much bore wear is acceptable? What can I get away with for an engine being rebuilt for a cruiser which may only see 1000 miles a year?
With 0.010" of wear at the top of the ring travel. I'm convinced I should bore oversize....is this normal wear for a nailhead with 65,000 miles, or 165,ooo miles?
    Thanks!

I have re-ringed sloppy bores up to .007 out of whack ..no problems . I here they start to break piston skirts from lots of slap greater than .010.

If you can feel the ridge with your fingernail, considering all the work installing new rings you are better off having it bored oversize and having new pistons fitted........depending on how bad it is, remember even with new rings it's already about half way worn out........prolly more. :bglasses:

Walt, it must at least 165,000 miles. I doubt at 65,000 you'd have that much wear.
You would be better off to bore it. Most ring manufacturers seem to feel about .008 to .009 is max, and reusing at that would only be for short term use. Remember this, for every .001 increase in bore diameter, your ring gap goes up I believe .003, so this would give you about a .050 ring end gap right at the top of the cylinder, not a good thing.
people used to do stuff like that on something they were trying to sell and did'nt want to put any money into. Jim Burek
