I'm planning to drive my car to get a new exhaust system next week. How loud will it be on the road with open stock manifolds? TOO loud to drive?

    It's a stock 1970 455.

Actually, I'm going about 25 miles or so, mostly highway.

I don't think it will hurt anything to drive it without exhaust... do you agree?

Open right at the manifolds? Quite loud.
I used to race with open stock manifolds but I had a flange near the trans.
Wasn't too bad ....sounded like a tractor.

Make sure you lift when a cop goes by. :Brow:

I wouldn't go to far. Theres always the danger of fire starting underneath the hood. Flames shooting out etc. Hope you don't get caught by a cop either.
If you have any blanks for a 12 gauge shot-gun just place the barrell near your ear and pull the trigger.

Hahaha! No kidding. I ran my GS 455 around the neighborhood with just the new headers I had put in........and that was way loud as well. Nothing like the scowering look of death from the eldery as I idled by before punching it.

I don't think it will hurt anything. I've always heard that NO MANIFOLDS would crack the heads but I think open manifolds are ok.

If you're going that far I have two words for you.......Ear Plugs!

This thread makes me want to tear out that beautiful exhaust system and relive that long ago Saturday morning oh so many years ago. The neighbors and the ricers need to hear what we are all about. :Brow: :Brow: :Brow:

I had a state cop follow me on the way home from the track one night. He could obviously see the BIG motorhome-like 3 in. UltraFlos but it is loud (600+ Stage 2 horses are never really quiet). Then he made gave up and made a U-ey....I hit it for an instant.....and saw him him his brakelights but he didn't come after me. Whew :moonu:

Yep but if I do it, it's going to be at 4 in the morning on a Saturday, idle to 6000 rpm and all the back down again and again!!!!!!!! I have a few folks that drive behind my house every morning at 5:30 with nice sounding Harley's. Nice sounding after 6 am....Before that :af: .............All I can say is, if you love the sound of American power at 5 in the morning you're going to love it at 4!!!!!!! :Brow: :3gears:

When I put the 430 in the camaro I had just open manifolds and the interior of that camaro is gutted, including AC equipment, so there are some big square holes in the firewall that I can see the engine though...when doing 1/4 style test runs in my country type neighborhood I wore ear plugs...other wise it was near painful...with a bare sheetmetal interior it was like a tin can with a BBB in it!

I was always told that running open manifolds (esp for 25 miles) would burn a valve. Something to do with the cold ambient air getting sucked back in the manifold on decelleration. The drastic change in temp would warp the edges of the exhaust valve. Never did it, so I couldnt tell you if there is any validity to it. Sounds plausible though.

   Now thats funny. I can just picture that. Maybe a tad disrespectful but hilarious for some strange reason.... Great mock up for a "Depends" commercial when you slammed the back barrels open.   :spank:

haha this reminds me we're at great lakes dragaway and my buddie is a ricer. they have all kinds of cars there that weekend and he's holding his ears and saying that the v8 cars are too loud. and i was just lovin the sound and the smell from those cars.

it's a changing generation when they think a fart can sounds good as opposed to a nice rumble to a roar.

I decided this afternoon to have it towed (flatbed only, natch) to the shop. Now I'm glad I did!

I have heard of this also. I don't have any true info to prove it right or wrong either though. I was told straight pipe was ok, but open maniflod was risky. :Do No:
