My GS has the GV overdrive with 3.73's out back. Final drive is 2.91. With the John Osborne Q-jet, I've seen a best of almost 16 MPG going 65-70 MPH (about 2300 RPM). I just put the AED 1000 Holley on, and took a 120 mile round trip up to the Marcus Dairy cruise night in Danbury Connecticut. I hit stop and go traffic for the first 1/4 of the trip and then 65-70 MPH the rest of the way. On the way home, it was a straight 65-70 MPH with no slow downs. Filled it up when I got home and was very pleased that the big Holley returned 13.1 MPG.

With 3.23s my spouse's yellow 455 convert gets about 10 mpg on the road. I suspect I could get 13-15 with a GV.

How do you like the Holley upgrade Larry?

Still have some minor throttle linkage problems to work out. The throttle is not opening all the way when I mat the gas pedal and it is too stiff. I have an AED billet throttle bracket that should solve all my problems. Still the one time I stood on it impressed me. There was a big difference and the motor sounded different too. If i get it down the track this Labor Day weekend, we will see.

I used to drive my 11 sec 65GS 140miles round trip to college 2-3 days a week for two semesters. I drove it from central CA, to phoenix, AZ twice. Was my daily everyday driver for almost 3 years. I have drove my 11sec lifted 1970K20, 4x4 from Co, to CA no problems. That engine ran 9.90's NA in a 3450LB 1970 camaro when it was fresh. And that was driven over 1HR to the track. Unless you are running a big solid roller, I think driving down the highway between 2000-3500RPM is much easier on the engine than idling around town.

made it back with no problems. :TU: I tried running the A/C this time but at 80-85 MPH and hot ambient temps the water temp was creeping up. I turned the A/C off when it got to 192 and the oil pressure had dropped to 30 psi @ 2500. The 4 core radiator I bought in 2004 from postons couldn't get rid of the the heat my 350 made at those speeds with the A/C on either so it was no suprise. I plan to install a radiator that will work before next spring.

I wanted to check my oil pressure @5000 when the water was 190 so I put her into neutral and revved it to 5K and it wouldn't go past 50 psi. :Dou: When I checked this after driving around town it would go to 65. Am I supposed to see 65-75psi @5000, taken at the rear of the block at any temp?

I had my foot in it more as well as running the A/C some on the way back and the mileage showed it with 9.6 MPG

Larry, have you looked at your plugs yet? Mine looked lean, very white porcelin, with the 80 jet on the primary. Also, JW said his HP1000 had 84's all around so I put 84's in the primaries on mine. Now my plugs have a nice color and I did notice a seat of the pants power increase. I need to do a plug check @ WOT to see if the 92 on the secondaries is too big. I suspect it is since I copied JW's build and his dyno sheet showed a good A/F ratio @ WOT with the 84's. His is a Holley and ours is an AED Holley so that may make a difference though.

I've been thinking the same thing today. Friday night, with the windage tray incident in the back of my mind, on my first long trip with this engine, my first 455 build, my first build that makes this much power, driving down I95 a couple hundred miles from home, all the parts stores closed, I couldn't help but worry. lol

I think the AED carb is different than the the out of the box Holley 1000HP. AED uses their own boosters and probably the air bleeds are different as well. Reading the plugs is harder with unleaded gas. I'm just going to run it the way it is. In alot of cases, the car will run faster when it is a little lean. We will see what happens.

I'm keeping it for sure. I plan to put it back on when I'm not racing. That is why I made the fuel line the way I did, so I could easily change from one to the other. It runs sweet with the Q-jet. The Q-jet won't make as much top end power but I don't need that on the street.

Larry im running the aed 850 and i recently installed the jegs version of that throttle bracket, there must be a slight diff between the chevy cable and the buick one cause i had to cut and weld to get the cable closer to the firewall for the throttle to open up all the way.before that i just bent the stock one back a little and it worked just fine.the red bracket will look cool though

Larry, where did you get this GearVendors Overdrive? The more I think about it the more I like it.

www.gearvendors.com I went with the gear vendors for several reasons. I considered the THM200R4. To build it to be reliable behind a BBB would cost 2000.00 or better plus the converter. The GV is only a .78 overdrive so a mild stall converter will work with it without slipping excessively. The GV is about 2300.00, but it is rated for 1200 HP. They flat out tell you in the instructions to experiment with it because there is nothing you can do to hurt it. It is made to be shifted at any throttle opening at any speed. I figure if my THM 400 needs a rebuild, that is 600-800.00. If the THM200R4 needs a rebuild, that's another 2000.00+ The GV can be turned on and off in any gear, so you can split the gears. You can choose to use it to up your RPM (if you don't have enough gear out back) by going through the traps in 2nd over.

Oh I know, but $2400? I only paid $5800 for the entire car. My money will go farther in other places. Thanks

Andy - JW dyno'd my motor at 560hp ... it see's trips ALL THE TIME. 3 times out to Ohio and back (600 miles each way) and racing once I'm there ... 200+ miles out to Cecil, race it all day, and drive it back. With previous builds and a bit less power I went a few times to BG - thats like 800+ miles

...just buy a nice loud stereo and you won't hear a thing :puzzled:

Marco had is #'s matching Stage1 4speed convert (I believe original untouched motor too) singing at 3500+ rpms on the way out to Ohio - now thats a bit on the wild side

Thanks for posting that Alan. That makes me feel better. I've actually been thinking about going to Englishtown this weekend and that trip I just took was a test. I'm still undecided though. :Do No:

If you're into a nice regional event with a car show and some bracket racing on sat and a nice race program on sunday then Englishtown is GREAT - I haven't missed it on 13 years - but - if you want to make ALOT of passes down the track and thats your main interest then plan on Cecil county in October ... plus its a good couple of hours closer for you

...either way we'd love to see you at one or both of the events !!
