On the early one's 66, you just remove the 3 bottom screws and slide up. On the 67/8 you do the same except remove the 2 side screws that hold the seat back lock. I cannot figure what holds the center push button or if it needs removed to get the back off, thanks.

The chrome button and escutcheon need to come off, there's 2 screws behind it. Clips in, it's one piece, gently pry it and it should come off.

The best way to take off the 69-72 chrome seat back release buttons is with a putty knife. You push it in along the sides of the button and gently pry the clip (under the button) up. Do this on one side a little then go to the other side. It will come right off.

If you pry up on the top or bottom it will crack the housing. Then you get to buy new ones and they are expensive.

Once it is off the screws are accessible.

Fact. Mine must have been really worn or broken, they came off with out tools. The new ones I put on? No way would they come off. :gp:

Thanks everyone for the info. I can see the 2 screws when I lift the button, but cannot get it out without cracking it, so will leave it and just clean the rest of the seats. Thanks.

    Greetings all,

This is my first post to the forum and I'm sure it will not be the last. I recently purchased a nice 1972 Buick Skylark and I've just successfully reupholstered the bottom driver bucket seat.
I'd like to reupholster the seat back but I cannot get the seat back lock button out.
I've tried the putty knives, hacksaw blades and screw drivers but can't seem to get it out. I do not want to destroy the seat back button or anything else around it.

You guys have explained how to get the clip out but I'm still unsure where the clip to get it out resides. If possible could someone post some pictures of the backside of the seat back button and also where the clip I'm suppose to remove to get it out?

I spent a good 45 minutes before I gave up or course I was already pooped from reupholstering the seat bottom.

Thanks in advance to all who respond.

    Hey Guys

I too wasted 45 minutes trying to figure this out.

Here is a picture of the back of the clip:

You need to push both sides in at the same time. I used to two flat blade screwdrivers and it popped right out.

Once you get access to the screws changing out the back only took a few minutes.

Hope this helps someone save some time.

    Happy Skylarking

i used two hacksaw blades many years ago to remove the button unit.
