  3. Bulbs are usually under a vacuum or filled with an inert gas to stop oxidation from forming on the filament. Beware of this when attempting to cut.

If your are going to put modern halogen bulbs in, there are companies that sell the lenses already set up for it. Even if that's not what you want to do, the lens with a big hole in the back might fit your needs (though would be expensive).

once a 5001 or 5002 has lost its seal, the reflector inside ages pretty quick.

my your cars are equipped with Vigilites and i have not yet found a modern headlight set-up that is compatible. in order to maintain operation from the Vigilites, modifications have to be made to the headlights and/or Vigilite system. :(

that point aside ... i like the Cibie modern headlights.

Search for conversion headlamps. Some will simply be halogen bulbs for your application, others are lenses, and you change the halogen bulb from the back. Try google, there are a lot of mfgrs out there.

ok I got what I wanted I just needed the face the rest mines pludge on the back goes to garbage.here is NEWS .A while ago I read a thread on different site that you can use H 7635 for head light hi beam, except the lens is clear and because of the beam spread is very low while you can get 160000 candle power out of it,what I,m trying to do,is to put front lens of 5001 infront of H7635 get the same beam spread with 160k candle power, so like spot light it won,t put the light on one spot ,and will be better than any expensive xenon light and sinceH7635 depth is3.75 and 5001 or 5006 is 4 inch adding that lens will recover that .25 inch differences.so you got your new 160k candle power hi beam for about 19 $ .I have to put in the car tomorrow and see how it works .wish me luck.

here is the pic pic of H7635 before and how it, is going to look like after, beam spread on 7635 is 6.5x4 and H5001 your regular hi beam is 26x5 the difference is face.on H7635 you have clear face or lens on 5001 you have what I cut off of 5001 ,so now I have 160000 candle power high beam instead of normal 55000 candle power 5001 head light ,three times the light same power (50 watt on both) now is there any 250$ or more XENON can give you that???????????????,all it takes 20min ,dremel ,and diamond coverd cutting disk,if you don,t want to pay 14.95$ for single disk,go to costco and get the chines version of dremel with 206 pieces for 25$ ,believe me it well worth it, it has 8000to 33000 rpmand just diamond cover bits which there are six of them is about 7to 15$ each are about50$ or if you buy dremel and try to by these afterward, that,s only 6 out of 206 pieces,ok I,m gonna go cut my second home made xenon hi beam!!!!!!!!!!!!! ha ha ha may be I should get patent # !!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont do like a local yokel here did. He adapted some air craft landing lights behind his grill and melted it down. :Brow:

back in about 1977 when I had my 1974 Riv. I had aircraft landing lights in place of the regular High beams. 100w, could see for miles! but had to be careful with approching cars.
also had to wire to a seperate switch. I found that out the hard way after I burnt up a headlight and dimmer switch.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but those lamps produce very close to the same amount of light. The 7635 just concentrates that light into a smaller area. By putting the lens from the 5001 in front of it, you're just spreading that light back out again, but less efficiently. So end result is that your hybrid lamp is going to give you less total light on the road than either of the originals. I can't find lumen ratings on either the 5001 or 7635, but they're the same lamp, just with a different lens on the front.

Candlepower doesn't = brightness. The lightbulb inside each of those reflector/lens assemblies is putting out the same amount of light, but the candlepower rating for those is going to differ because candlepower measures the brightness with regard to the beam size. the 7635 is putting all that light into a very tight beam, so its candlepower will be high. the 5001 has the same amount of light, just spread out more, so its rating will be lower.

If you're wanting more light in the same beamspread as your original 5001's, save your effort. Its not gonna happen this way. The candlepower will probably be just above or below your 5001 depending on the reflector shape in the 7635. And the total light output will be less too since you're losing light through 2 lenses instead of the usual 1.

If you're wanting to see farther, the 7635 will put the light farther down the road, however as unclelar said, you're going to have to be very careful about not blinding other drivers. There is a reason the 7635 isn't approved as a OE headlight. Also, you will get a ticket if you blind a cop with those.

I may go to make it fog light!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well the reason the candle power is high is only one thing by moving the filament back a little,so since it still is 55 watt I,m not gonna burn any wire because H5001 is also 55watt,no need to wire change,no melt down,I,m not going to use it when there is a car coming, since it is week end ,and mostly daily drive car,and i,m more towards finding to find the way have the second lens yellow to use as fog light,if I can find some kind of yellow glass spray, but I appreciate all inputs, regardless ,if you agree or not,I believe you learn more by listening more.

how about turn it to fog light!!!!!!!!!!!!

you are 100 percent right .I just came from work and tried without and with second lens ,there is no cheap way to get more light ,but at least I tried, thaks any way ,you learn something by trying, next I,m gonna try to turn it yellow and get the fog light out of it. ,I don,t give up EZ!!!!!! :Brow:

Got a part number for those aircraft landing lights?

I'm always impressed by train locomotive headlights...hmm....

The H7635's Kia is playing with are like ACL's, but will directly replace your highbeams, no extra wiring.(well maybe the connector) Actual ACL's are a much bigger lamp and as was mentioned draw much more power and must be wired seperately. If you really want them I can look up a part # for you and give you a rough list cost.

Actually, I was wrong, there are actual ACL's that would be a direct size replacement, but again, they draw 250 watts to your headlights 50. Also, ACL's typically have a rated lifespan of 25 hours and a duty cycle of 5 minutes, compared to the headlight's 100-200 hr life and no duty cycle.

Just curious about the possibilities... :Brow:
I see you're in Atlanta, any connection with Atlanta Light Bulbs? Browsing around their website, I noticed the 4551, a 5-3/4 diameter, 250W 28V aircraft taxiing bulb, along with the Q4559, a ?? diameter, 600W  28V landing light.

I'm not sure how you'd get the 28V, but if you could: Uf-Dah! :bglasses:

Seriously, what's the best/brightest high-beam bulb (for our old 4-bulb cars) you think could be practically put in a car, assuming relays and good wires?

    Nope, no connection.

ACL's come in up to 8" diameter which would seem to be the q4559 you found.

A 5-3/4" headlight is a par 46 size lamp, so if you search for that size lamp, 12.8v at GE, you'll get a list of what will swap in directly. Again, not all of these will have the same connector as a headlight, but you should be able to rig an adaptor pretty easily. Unfortunately they don't provide photometric data for headlights, so I can't tell which would be best, brightest, most coverage. The only clue they give you is the wattage. Phillips and Sylvania are even worse about their search engines.
