"hotter" coil - is that going to hurt my Buick tach?

    Not at all. Doesn't matter what the coil is rated at. The tach is just sensing how many times the coil is pulsed and converting it to RPM's on the tach. The only exception to that is an MSD which dumps 450+ volts into the coil. In that case the tach connects to the MSD box.
